PVC's and late night chest/back pain

I am a healthy athletic 51 year old with no weight issues who has been diagnosed with PVC's a couple of years ago by my cardiologist, after wearing a holter monitor and having a echo cardiogram/stress test with no issues.

Lately, the PVC's have been waking me up with a tight pain between my shoulder blades at night.  It is painful enough that I have to get up, walk around, and do deep breathing, which helps it go away, but it can happen again several times at night.  It is sometimes accompanied by a fair amount of sweating.  After a big one or several, the feeling of tightness can linger for several hours at a lower level. Doesn't happen during the day, and exercise both aerobic and anaerobic is no problem, even helps with residual tightness.

The PVC's are annoying, but this is a little scary.  Any idea what this can be?

Thanks very much for your advice.

Hi emmoh,

It is difficult to say what it is for sure -- it sounds like you need some additional tests.  Breaking out into a sweat is a very non specific symptoms -- meaning it does not help narrow down a diagnosis or cause -- but I do take it very seriously.  If this is a new symptoms and you have not been evaluated since this started, I would contact your doctor and let them know about it.  I would want to re evaluate your heart with an EKG, holter monitor, possibly an echocardiogram and stress test depending the what I thought after a thorough history and physical.  Sometimes sweating is a sign that you are having significant pain.  Sweating associated with chest pain can also be a symptom  of heart problems and this should be taken serously.  I don't say this to scare you but you should be evaluated.  You could call you doctors office to talk to the doctor on call to describe these symptoms and ask how he wants you to proceed.  If you are having ACTIVE chest pain, you should just go to the hospital to be evaluated.  It is very smart of you to not ignore these symptoms and I encourage you contact your doctor to ask how they want you to proceed.  If you don't mind, please post some follow up about this issue in the near future after you talk to your doctor.

Thanks for the post and good luck.
