PVCs and magnesium?

by jayblack, Dec 11, 2007 08:52AM
Hi there,

I have just turned 30 and I have been dealing with on and off PVCs (only 1 at a time thankfully) for about 7 years.  I have done all the tests twice (EKG, ECHO, HOLTER) now and everything has come up fine.  Docs told me to "get on with my life"

Anyways, lately they have been more frequent (at least once every 2 days or so) and it has me searching for answers.  I used to go months at a time without them, and now they are so frequent that I am scared and very ANXIOUS (which i think is making them worse).

I read on a heart arrhythmia forum that magnesium supplements are good for PVCs.  Does anyone have any insight on this?  I have started taking some over the past week or so but I am not sure that I can say I have noticed a change.  Also, I have read about CoQ10 tablets.  I have these as well and started taking a small amount on the weekend, but once again nothing has really seemed to change.

I know I should be very thankful that I am getting these so infrequently compared to others on this board, but about 7 years ago my father passed away from complications of a virus in his heart, so I am all the more freaked out.  I can relate with everyone on this board ... they are so terrible!!

Thanks for any info :)

I just wanted to add to this ... the reason why I started looking at the supplements was because about 3 months ago I started taking ONE A DAY vitamins.  Prior to taking them I was getting a PVC every 2 days or so ... then from the day I took the first vitamin they stopped completely for 8 weeks!!  I was like OH MY GOD, all of this time it was just a lack of vitamins/nutrients!!  but that didnt last ... and now I am here :(

I have read that some people have had success with magnesium.  I've been taking it for awhile with no real change.  The nature of palpitations is that they come and go and it is sometimes easy to speculate the cause - like the coincidence with taking vitamins and them stopping.  We should remember that in most cases, this is an electrical problem not one caused by a deficiency.  That being said, it doesn't hurt to rule this out or avoid triggers such as alcohol or caffeine in some cases.

I did take the magnesium supplement for my PVC's and for me it helped, I was taking calcuim supplements as well.  My situation did eventually get worse and I was put on Flecainde (I was also pregnant at the time) this has taken care of the problem.

ok thats good to know thanks.  I have been taking mag and cal supplements and I have heard that it can take a few weeks for your body to build up your mag levels if they are depleted.   I will just keep at it and see if anything changes.

I have been totally caffeine free since the very first palp so I know thats not causing it!!
