PVC's triggered by anti-depressants?

by lasseire, Mar 07, 2008 12:15PM
Hi all,

I was dx'd in Nov. of last year w/ benign PVC's - they came on one day after I had upped my dosage of Zoloft from 50-100mg.  At the time, I was also taking Meridia 10mg., which is a weight loss drug, but it works on brain chemicals, much like an anti-depressant.  After multiple EKG's, an echo and a 24 hr. holter, I saw the Electrophysiologist who assured me that the PVCs, even as many as I was having (thousands a day), were not in any way dangerous.  He recommended I stop taking the Meridia, so I did.  I also stopped taking the Zoloft as it wasn't working.  I was free of meds for about 6 weeks and noticed I wasn't having any more PVC's!  But I was also in the deepest, darkest depression place.  So I started taking Wellbutrin.  Well, within 3 days the PVCs were back.  Cardiologist said it should be safe to continue the Wellbutrin, but if I had any other side effects, to call them back.  ??  My Primary Care is out of the country until the 18th, but I plan on asking him about this, too.

My ? is has anyone else had issues w/ anti-depressants triggering PVC's?  I'm really stuck here bec. I can't seem to live w/ the depression, but the PVCs worry me.  If they are triggered by a medication, to me, that seems to say I shouldn't take that med for fear of it causing more/different heart effects.  ???

Any ideas are much appreciated!

Maybe try different meds.  I was on some hypertension meds that started my PVCs.  Eventually they went away...but it took a year.

Good luck.

Hmm.  For me, I took Celexa for 5 years and my heart has NEVER felt better than it did during those 5 years.

Try a different medication.

I agree with the others -  maybe try a different med.  I have panic disorder, OCD  and  take 10 mg a day of Prozac and it has been wonderful, no heart activity that I can link to Prozac.  I take 80 mg twice daily of BetaPace for the SVT and Atrial Fibrillation diagnosis.  I'm sorry you are in this dilemma- you'll find a med that works, though.  Take care and let us know how you're doing.
