Post surgical modified Bental Procedure, 3-17-10

Ihad a thoracic aortic aneurism (aneurysm), wich was surgicall corredted on 3-17-10. I have a pacer ICD, which is set at 70 BPM at rest. After the surgery the cardiologist incorrectly set my pacing at 90 BPM. After approx. two days I went into afib which no one ate the hospital noticed. Even though my HB was consistantly at 90 BPM, contradictory to the order of 7- BPM at rest. Because of the laarge amounts of oxyxodone I was on for the post surgical PX, I did not feel the the increases HB for about three and one half weks.I can describe the beat as pounding and very uncomfortable. At that time I alerted my wife that I did not feel right. She called my cardiologist. They interigated my pacer/ICD and didcovered that I was incorrectly set at 90 per minte and had been in AFIB for three and one half weeks. I immediately went to see the doctor and the settings were corrected. I was prescribed coumadin to prevent clotting anf after 30 days recieved a cardioversion. The problem is that I am continueing to hace a very strong HB. The same feeling and intensity as I originall experienced. My Cardiac physicianput me on Topro ER 100 mg. with noe relief. He increased it to 200 MG without relief and eventually to 300 MG per day also without relief. I then started to have side effect, I believe from the Toplol. My face and hands became numb, HA, ringing in the ears and difficulty sleeping. Also some SOB, and exercise intolerance. My question is, could the incorrect setting of the pacer/icd immediately after the surgery have caused some sort of damage to the new valve and dacron aorta. Perhaps additional imflamation and scar tissue. In naddition I am in PVC Bigeminy. My cardiologist has now decide to taper the Toprol and start me on Mixilitine(unsure of the spelling), 150 MG BID, with a plan that if it works to increase to TID. Before the surgery I felt good, I was basicly Asymptomatic, a few pvc's but they were occasional and I basicly ignore them. Background. I had a ROSS procedure for a congenital defect of my aortic valve in 1999. On TOPROL 25 TO 100 MG OVER THE LAS 10 YEARS. I hAve also had 2 Cardiac Ablasions for PVC's. The 1st was not a success. The second very successful. My quality of life at this time is not good. I look foward to hearing your opinion. Thankyou, Tom

Very complicated story.... I am not surprised to read you had some problems with 300 mg of Toprol.  I've used it at 200 mg levels and had difficulties, I'm nwt taking 50 mg and have had a calcium channel blocker added.

It sounds like your AFib is under control, and if the pacemaker/ICD is now set correctly I'd hope to read you are getting better... but you didn't end with that, so something must still be wrong.  The best I can offer is to keep working with your doctor(s) and hope that someone else on this community can come up with some helpful information/experience.
