Resting HR 114

I recently caught a cold and spent the last two days on the couch.  I take 25 mg atenolol at 4 pm.  It is 1:14 pm.  Right now resting HR is 111-115.  Is this dangerous?  I plan to take atenolol in a few hours.  This is really bugging me.

Monitoring your heart rate and worrying about only makes it go up.  When this happens take some deep breaths and relax.  Don't check it every 5 minutes.  I could tell by your post that you are obsessing about it.

Don't worry.  I used to do the same thing.  Deep breaths and it goes down.  If you have a cold or sickness your heart rate will increase.  When your sick don't even bother monitoring it.

If the fever is making your rate soar, it's time for tylenol or motrin to squelch the fever.  The rate DOES naturally go up with the fever.  ALSO, running fevers makes you sweat and is a quick way to dehydrate.  When people go to the hospital with a fever and tachycardia, it is almost always from dehydration.  Drink.  Drink. Drink.  1-2 liters of water to start.  If you drink until it looks like you are peeing water only, your rate will slow down.  Don't drink beverages that are in themselves dehydrating, ie tea, coffe, soda, alcohol.  The cold you just have to roll with, but the fever and dehydration are treatable and should be if they are problematic.  Hope you feel better soon.

Thank you for your response.  HR is coming down a little now.  BP is okay.  Was getting a little high.  Didn't get any sleep last night and this may have been part of reason for high HR.  Hopefully, can sleep tonight.  If stays high at rest, I guess will have to take trip to ER or call doc.  Money.  If anything, I think I will call pharmacist tomorrow to see if I can take anything with BB.  Thank you again.

I agree, your HR is getting too high.

Try to be very restful and not take any medications that might accelerate - I'd know there are some cold medications that are depressants, tend to make one sleepy.  They may help without raising your HR.

If the at FULL REST  HR runs in the over 130 range at rest I'd consider seeking emergency help.

Thank you for your response.  My current temp is 100 and some sites say to let fever run its course, as is body's way of fighting infection.  But this fever is running up my HR.  I am two  and 1/2 days into this cold and they say can last a week.  I hope not.  Maybe I'll try sleeping on it and see how it is in the morning.  I wonder if I should take 25 more mg of atenolol?  I don't want to, as I don't think I need this when I am well.  Again thank you for your response, as it has somewhat set my mind at ease.

I also have a high resting HR, but thankfully not up in the 140's.  When I have a fever, my HR is up in the 120-130 range, goes higher when I get up.  I don't take any medications outside of Tylenol for the fever.  Your body is fighting an infection and the heart responds by speeding up.  I know there are medications out there that have the 'heart' symbol on them, meaning that they are safe to take with High PB, not sure what they do for the HR, although they would not have the stimulants that the other meds do and since HBP is treated with a Beta Blocker, they might be better for you.

If you are really scared, give the ER or your doctor a call and talk with them.  I'll bet they won't be too concerned unless it goes higher.  A call is easy and they can either set your mind at rest or give you some options.  Take care and get over that cold fast.

I ended up taking atenolol 2 hours early, as HR was getting to 147 by just getting up and walking around.  This cold is tough and when I get this, it tends to move into lungs as bronchitis.  I hope this doesn't happen, as I'm not sure what doc's would do if I went to see them with high HR.  Does anybody know any decongestant that does not interfer with beta blocker?  They all seem to.  Also, what would anybody do with this high HR.  I'm 44 yo male on 25 mg atenolol for fast heart rate.  It seems like I was better off of this stuff.  It has me very scared.  Thank you.
