Can you please help me Doctor , I need your advice:
I have here a result of my 2D-Echo with Explaination.

QUANTITATIVE:
Dimension       Measurement         Normal
   LV(ed)               5.2cm              (4.5-5.0)  -----  Which is not normal

2D-Echo:
-Dilated left ventricle with adequate wall motion and contractility with Ejection Fraction of 76%.
-Normal left atrium, right atrium, right ventricle, main pulmonary artery and aortic root dimensions.
-Floppy anterior mitral valve leaflet with mild prolapse into left atrium during systole.
-Structurally normal tricuspid valve, pulmonic valve and aortic valve.

DOPPLER:
-Normal E/A across the mitral valve.
-Normal color flow.

CONCLUSIONS:
-Dilated left ventricle with adequate left ventricular function.
-Mitral valve prolapse

Hope you can help me. God Bless You Always.

Hello,
I think  your question is in regards to the mildly dilated left ventricle. It is important to know why the study was performed -- for example if you are having shortness of breath or leg swelling or bacause you have a strong family history of heart failure, this would suggest that there is some clinical heart failure to acompany the echo finding.  Regardless, it is important to repeat the study in 3-6 months or if your symptoms change to assess for any changes in ventricular size.  This could represent an error with study measurement, a normal variant, or the early stages of heart failure.  A repeat study in 3-6 months to evaluate for progression is important.

There a blood test called brain naturetic peptide (BNP) that might be able to help indirectly measure increased filling pressures in your heart and potential help predict heart failure.

It sounds like the MVP does not have regurgation and is unlikely the cause the LV chamber size.  If the MVP is significant and there is a murmur, make sure you ask your doctor if you should be on antibiotics with certain procedures like dental procedures.

Depending on the reason for the echo (symptoms?), it may also be reasonable to start medications like an ACE inhibitor and beta blocker at this time.  Clinical correlation is needed.

I hope this helps.  Thanks for posting and good luck.
