Rhythm problems after mitral valve repai and maze

I had a cleft anterior leaflet mitral valve repair and maze procedure via right thoracotomy over two months ago. A few days after the surgery I had a complete third degree heart block with long pauses due to an AV node injury during the surgery. (We have learned that my conduction system does not follow the normal path) The pauses resolved after a few days. I had a temporary pacer so a permanent one was not put in. I have always had a first degree block. Next I had a few days of atrial flutter then settled into sinus tachycardia with some episodes of atrial tach and a lot of PVCs which are being controlled with Topril XL. Three weeks post-op I developed a competing junctional rhythm which makes me very symptomatic. My sinus rhythm runs about 95 to 110 bpm on the Topril but when I go into the junctional my rate actually drops to 80 bpm so it doesn't seem to be an escape rhythm or the automatic type that takes over the sinus since it is actually slower but still not bradycardia. Anyone have information about this problem or know the long term outcome?

I had a mitral valve repair and maze done in November 2007.  I did not have any complications, however, one month after the surgery my sinus rhythm went into Atrial Flutter, about 130 bpm, then into AFig (again, the old problem).  I underwent an electrocardioverson on August 29, 2008 and it put me back in sinus, but for only a couple of weeks.  I'm back in AFlutter, taking Toprol 150 mg and Rhymol 425 mg twice a day.

Not sure this data helps, but my start condition was the same as yours, except for the details: my mitral leaflets were in good shape, the surgeon installed a passage reducing ring that made it possible for my leaflets to close the passage.  No complications, so the valve surgery was a success so far, AFib remains a problem.
