I have had many tests done (EKG, holter monitor, blood) and no one can give me the answer as to why at certain times I develop a pounding heart about 20 min. after eating and may last a couple of hours. It is not really tachycardia but around 110 but my heart pounds so hard that I feel it in my chest, throbbing on my lips and fingertips and feel like I have a difficult time breathing. I am on high blood pressure meds and beta blocker and still it happens. It does not even have to be a large meal. I think it has to do with the contents of the meal because it does not happen all of the time. It sometimes happens if I have just a glass of wine.
I don't doubt that it is harming my arteries because of the increased blood pressure which causes them to expand and over time may weaken the artery walls. I wish a cardiologist would read all of these postings and comment or do some research on it.
The same thing happened to me. I ate a huge meal and my heart rate started to go up and up, even while on 12.5 mg Toprol. I've been eating very small meals the past week, b/c I'm afraid of it happening again. It hasn't so far, so I'm slowly starting to relax. It was very scary though. How fast was your heart rate?
I think it is fairly common. I know my rate goes up, especially if I eat something I am either allergic to or am sensitive to. Also, our digestive has to work harder when we eat, especially if it is a big meal, and this in turn can boost the entire metabolism up and cause a faster rate. I know for awhile, I used to be afraid to eat because I would always feel my heart more, but, now that does not bother me, I wish the PAC's did not bother me. Oh well, all takes time, I guess.
It's not uncommon. I get short bursts of tachy if I eat too quickly or too much. I've learned to slow down and eat less as well.
