Scared

I was wondering, how likely will a slight infecton from a wisdom tooth be at making your heart infected..I didnt state that right but you know what I mean...I am very scared that because I have something going on with my gums and my wisdom tooth that its making my heart more worse then normal AND will end up enlarging it or making the valve get messed up...I would go to the dentist NOW but its not possible untill about a month...(thats when the insurance kicks in)...My cheeks not swollen or anything..part of the tooth broke away causing the gum to go over the existing tooth...theres a pocket there,i try my best to keep it clean..but theres deff some puss. Its been like this for awile..(too long)..Im scared to death its allready done damage..my heart has been acting more haywire then normal..my sisters going to send me some antibiotics for it....I just know the significance between your heart and your teeth and gums..so im SCARED.

Oh, yes, one more intricacy of the American Health Care system, the good old HMO. Tell them to speed up!!!

ps, systemic means something that affects your whole body.

Good luck with the insurance

Its just they said since im not in the computer??It will take a few weeks...I know strange but for Kaiser you have to call a call center to make an appt.Well when I tried to make one she said I wasnt going to be able to untill they put all my info in there,THEN once its showing I can pick a doctor online and then call back for an appt.Today when I tried to at least pick a doctor,it said my medical record was no good:( Im calling them right now actually!

Lagoya, love your humour. You might adjust the cost on the American side, the Euro is dropping like a stone :-)

julesluvsdrew: My worst fear is being in the dentist chair with a bad bout of pvcs. I even feel the same way about going to the hairdresser. Dread both appointments. It's one time I know I will take xanax for sure, for sure.

My regular dentist pulled my wisdom teeth, but that's not as common now. I'd call around and ask, and I'd make the appointment now because it might not happen until some time in the future. And I'd definetly let them know, when you meet them, that you have nsvt. I know my dentist very well.

In the meantime, I would ask your employer or health insurance to define what "getting into the system means", specifically what is your effective date?? If your effective date is September 1st, you are covered September 1st. You don't have to be in the computer system to get care, they can catch up later.

OOps forgot to include my question.Im very concerned because in the end Im going to have to get this wisdom tooth pulled (whats left of the tooth, its top parts broken off). Now for most people gettting a tooth pulled is no big deal but with my heart problem,I cant be put out to sleep,so it will have to be done while im awake.Which honestly I dont mind,I would rather be awake,I have never been put out for anything, nor do I want to start now.My sister had her wisdoms pulled while being awake as well. The thing is theres no way Im going to go get that done untill my heart issue is addressed.I have to be put on something for my nsvt...I cant risk being in that dentist chair having that happen,I cant take that chance with my anxiety!!!!Also dentists reffer patients to oral surgeons to have the wisdom teeth pulled, theres no way I can afford that.In the past I was reffered when I had insurance but I couldnt afford it!!!!!!So do you know of any reg dentists who take out wisdom teeth?

HEy,thanks for your comments, unfortunatly my insurance doesnt kick in for a few weeks! They have to get me in the system and that takes some time.I cant afford to just go to the dr right now either.Im going to gargle with warm salt water daily and try some mouth wash...Its the best I can do for now. What does systemic mean?

Insurance in the United States is an interesting thing.

I believe a person has three options

1) Go without
2) Purchase Individual Coverage
3) Possible coverage under an Employer plan (your job).

Insurance for an individual, or paid by the employer, can be expensive and is age dependant--the older you are the more it costs.

As an individual, if you have a pre-existing condition, depending upon what it is, you might not even be considered to be insurable. With employer coverage, you are guaranteed coverage, that is why employer plans cost the company more, and sadly some employers are now passing some or all of the cost to the employee, or dropping their plans all together.

If you are an individual you have the option of choosing a plan that has a higher deductible. The higher the deductible, the lower the monthly premium for coverage. I just raised my deductible to $5000 in order to keep my monthly premium reasonable, now $160/month and that's cheap comparatively.

The good thing is, with that insurance, even while I am paying for almost everything myself (until I satisfy $5000), if I choose a participating provider they accept the "insurance allowables" which is usually less than their actual charge.

Under employer plans, most deductibles are in the range of $100 to $500 dollars, and then the patient is responsible for either a copayment ($5 to $35)  or coinsurance usually 20%.

Cost? Approximately $150 for an office visit, $500 for a specialist. Echo $750. Holter $300, Event Monitor $600. MRI $1200. Minor surgery with at hospital with
anaesthetist $3600. How do I know??? That's what my explanation of benefits from the insurance stated. Thankfully because I use participating providers, I'm responsible for a little less :-) ha ha

However, Canadians, who are supposed to be covered for everything--arent. And they have long waiting lists. I know this too, I'm an expat Canadian. I have many stories first hand experience, and know their system isn't the solution.

Lengthy post, but I hope it gives you a better understanding of the situation?

i still do not get the insurance thing in the states --is this right
if u have no insurance and are unwell u cant go to your doc without being charged massive fees--but if u are unwell u have to find a job in order to get insurance to try and get yourself well--is that right or is it more complicated,it's just u see a lot of questions in here with people unwell and cant go to the doc cause they have no insurance, does that mean they cant go to their personal gp or doctor at all, that does not sound right --see i'm confused .in ireland u still have to pay for your gp visit insurance or not ,some companies now offer so much off as per visit but not a lot--insurance really kicks in for hosiptal visits and procedures and esp if u want to go private,
just wondering?

I know that you said you had insurance coverage now, so maybe you can see a medical doctor to get antibiotics?

There are many kinds of antibiotics for different types of infections, and different lengths of treatment. An antibiotic does NOT cover all types of infections. The one your sister has might not be appropriate for you.

I don't want to alarm you, dental infections can be very serious for systemic infection not just infecting your heart.
Since you've had this for a long time and it's only recently gone bad, bad, please make a good decision.

Could you call the dental office and request an appointment for a check-up or even just a consultation? Often these are less expensive (sometimes free if you can find a mail coupon), and at least the dentist can assess the tooth, prescribe the appropriate antibiotic until your next appointment to fix the tooth (under insurance coverage). Most dentists can't get you in for weeks in advance anyhow.

At least go to a medical doctor if you have insurance coverage, to get the right antibiotic.

Thanks both of you.I understand where you are coming from about self medicating.Actually the only reason I am thinking about taking the antibiotics (besides being scared)is that its the same kind I have taken before my dental procedures..Anyway yes Im weary about that now because a couple of months ago(before my tooth was bad bad)when I went to the e.r. the doc gave me antiobiotics and I ended up not finishing them...(I know stupid)..

Hey....I know it is scary, and I understand your fear.  I agree with lagoya that I don't think your current situation sounds bad enough to affect your heart.  However, ANY infection or fever or anything that runs you down can cause arrhythmias to act up.  Poor sleep patterns, active immune system, increased heart rate to help activate the immune response are all things that can cause an already itchy heart to get even itchier.  As for the antibiotics from your sister, you have to be really careful with that.  I understand why you want to take them, and I'm not necessarily disagreeing with your decision to do so, but I have some guidelines for you to follow in order to keep from doing more harm than good!!!

First of all...make sure you have a FULL COURSE of antibiotics available to you.  Depending on the type of antibiotic this could be a two week course, or a 5 day course.  If you only take a partial regimine, then you are likely to find yourself with a resistant strain infection that could actually start to cause the problems you are afraid of.  Right now it sounds like you have a run of the mill abcess.  If you only treat it partially and it doesn't kill all of the bacteria, then you could find yourself with a superbug that can travel to the blood stream.  This may sound extreme, but it's not.  This is EXTREMELY COMMON now days because of the over and inappropriate use of antibiotics in the human population.  Bacteria have mutated to resist most medications and if you don't treat them long enough they will take over!!!

You may want to call your dentist, the one that you can't visit until your insurance kicks in.  OR your general practitioner!!!  You can go to a public clinic as well.  While you may not be able to have an official appointment with the dentist, he could give you sample packs of meds until you can come in.  Also, if you have a public walk in clinic you can go and show them the infection.  They can't fix the tooth, but they can most assuredly prescribe you an antibiotic that is geared specifically at alleviating the infection that you do have.

Please be careful with self medicating.

Take care.

i dont have the answer you really want --

salt and water jules keep rinsing the mouth with salt and water to protect the gums   or u can get anti-septic mouth washes until u go to the dentist --   there may be a small link between heart disease and gum disease but i think there would a lot of other factors at play ,like smoking, body mass index, age ,diabeties, blood pressure, cholesterol etc, u know in general how a person looks after themselves ,i dont think one bad tooth would be enough cause we all get one of those in life, keep an eeye on it ,if it is really bad maybe u should see the dentist--
i'm sorry i dont have a better answer
