Spoke with Cardiologist about Omega 3 Fish Oil

by lucyluu, Sep 24, 2008 07:19PM
Ok so there were 2 discussions going on about Fish Oil.  In one of the posts someone said that Fish Oil could be life threatening to someone with an arrythmia.  I spoke with my Cardiologist today about this because I take Fish Oil and I want to know the answer to that statement.

This is what he said.  When a person has a bad arrythmia and other heart issues they are given 2000mg of Fish Oil daily to prevent suddent cardiac death.  He said that Fish Oil has been proven to prevent sudden cardiac death in patients with arrythmias.  He also said that Fish Oil has slight blood thinning qualities and that used with an Asprin can be very helpful. He also like the fact that I took up Yoga again.

He told me to take 1200mg a day for my situation.  I absolutely do not need 2000mg a day so if you are going to take this ask your doctor for your proper dosage that fits your situation.

Thanks for sharing that info.  I've had arrythmias for many years, but have never heard the correlation between SCD and Omega-3's.  I'm thinking that's because I don't have a "bad" arrythmia.  Whew!

Interesting.  Thanks for getting an answer.  I guess it makes sense from the blood thinning perspective.  It would be nice if all the dr's got on the same page!

I dont think were out of the woods yet but hopefully this could help us day to day.  The supplement that I bought and was discussing was an Omega 3 Fish Oil Supplement by Nature Made.  I use their Magnesium and Vitamin C and have had great results.  When the Cardiologist was speaking he was mainly referring to the Fish Oil.  Sorry about my lack of detail.  When I see him again I will ask more about the Omegas.

I know rr this is what frustrates me about medicine.  It seems like everything is up in the air and its all an opinion.  Its very scary.  Still in the back of my mind is what if my Cardiologist is wrong and Im telling all of you this.  I just try to listen to my body and if it acts up over something I put in my body on 2 different occasions then I dont take it again.

Not to push a specific product but I've tried fish oil capsules years ago and they made me sick, burping nasty fish oil for hours. A few months ago I thought I'd try them again but bought Nature Made. I didn't have a single problem or burp. I'm sure there are other good quality fish oil caps out there but I wanted to add Nature Made does a good job. I use some of their other vitamins (Super B's).

I've tried Nature's Bounty Omega 3 fish oil 1200 mg 3 pills a day for about a month now and I've only had a few pvc's a day, somedays I get none and somedays I would get from 2 to 5 pvc's, I am pretty sure it is the Omega 3 helping my heart and also I jog 1.5 miles a day.
