Sudden death of my dad

by sujathavivek, May 29, 2008 01:34AM
My dad is 71 years - he had slightly high BP - as per the doctors nothing to panic about. He believed in exercise a lot - so he used to go for walking and practise yoga. So he was very fit with no ailments.
However on May 6th morning he returned from walking - while removing his shoes he had heavy breathing problesm and collapsed - this happened within 10 to 15 mins - Emergency was called in and they did try CPR.
However they could not revive him. He was then taken to the hospital. The hospital report stated that the reason for death is atherosclerosis cardiovascular disease. However there was no post-mortem done - so how would the doctors have identified the reason for death?

When the paramedics arrived, did they run an EKG?  Perhaps the strip indicated something going on??  Was there any bloodwork done?

Do you know if your Dad ever had any cardiac tests?  Maybe the doctor was aware of CAD.  Also, I believe that sometimes, CAD can develop despite our best efforts to minimize our risk factors.  There are a few members on the forum who have heart trouble, but do not fall into the risk categories.

I'm sorry about the loss of your Dad.  Please take care.

I am so sorry for your loss - it must have been such a shock that this condition was never diagnosed and your dad seemed to be so fit.

Yes, the paramedics did the EKG. However at hospital, my brothers were asked if there was any family history on heart problems - they did state that my dad's mom had passed in a similar way. So I am wondering if due to the history and age the cause of death was stated as atherosclerosis cardiovascular disease? Also would it have helped if the CPR was tried immediately rather than 10 mins later?
