Supraventricular Tachyardia

Having finally been confirmed with SVT by an ekg in the ambulance my doc has me put on Metoprolol 25mg twice a day in addition to my Diovan HCT that I've taken for 5 years.  My heart rate is now in the mid 50's to low 60's...was usually in the mid 80's.  I'm also scheduled for an appt with cardiologist but not until December.  I'm just a little concerned because the whole event was very scary and having turned 50 I need some assurance that this course of action is reasonable.  Should I be seen by a cardiologist sooner?

SVTs are seldom dangerous arrythmias.  They only cause problems in patients with coronary artery disease and people with syndromes that are usually easily picked up on EKGs (like wolf parkinson white syndrome and atrial fibrillation).

It usually does not need to be seen right away.  Ask your primary care doctor.  If they are comfortable, you should be too. Most PCPs can get you in to see a cardiologist if needed.

I hope this helps.

Thank you....your comments did reassure me that we are on the right path.  I'm really surprised at how much the Metoprolol slowed down my heart rate...and took the "edge" off.
