Want off my Beta Blocker

Did anyone have any major side effects?  I have read alot of post on the subject but I was wondering if anyone was only on it for a very short time and stopped?  I have only been on it for about 2 weeks.  I have decided I would rather just deal with it ( pac's and pvc's) My doctor keeps saying give it a chance but I dont think he is getting how crappy and not like myself I feel.   Its acebutolol.

search  - gerd and arrhythmia-  surprising amount of information - as noted in another posting to you I am getting relief with prilosec otc (generic)...  I am also getting an endoscopy to see if there might be a link with my vague abdominal symptoms and PVC's.  Ruled out cardiovascular disease as a basis for my arrhythmia.

I agree I feel great in the morning a few pvc here and there then by 2 or after i have eaten i feel like crud my regular doctor seems to think it may be linked to my stomach?  I am not sure I agree with him but my cardio just said try this and see if it helps.  My mother had a quadruple bi pass at 54 so i think he is looking at her health also.  We have the same cardiologist small town where i live.

I dont think i was registering over 10,000 a day on my holter.  When I went to see the cardio they were about every 6th beat or so.

A weakend hearet over time from pvc's/pac's? is that because you have a ton of them? (how many?)

I would really question why he's treating you...everything I've read and been told has been it takes literally thousands 15,000+ pvc's daily for quite awhile for them to do any damage causing cardiomyopathy and even then it's  extremely rare for CM to happen.  if you were to develop pvc induced cardiomyopathy; then an ablation would be necessary to reverse the damage there's just no clear cut rule who will develope it and who won't

I'm with ISW on meds - dr's are so quick to hand out scripts for a symptom instead of finding a cause.  Have you had full blood tests including complete thyroid and electrolyte panels done?

btw quality of life can be fine with even 20,000, 30,000; 50,000 pvc's' it's all about perception. I went through 35+ years with arrhytmia's and stayed in bigeminy from April 2007 - August 2009  with 50,000 pvc's daily and nothing happened until August 2009 after I was given Nitro during a Tilt test and had an abltion and what I think caused my heart damage.

funny story to compare things...my last cardiologist treated a woman for many years with bb's who had 80,000 pvc's daily - she had no symptoms and no structural heart problems; she never developed any weakening of the heart like I did.

if you're in doubt I would seek a 2nd or even 3rd opinion as it seems the bb he has you on is really messing your system up and may not be the treatment for you.

He just said his only concern would be a weakened heart over time and my overall quality of life since my anxiety kicks in when I have them.

Heart disease runs in both sides of my family so he is concerned about that.

All my tests come out normal.  Everything is structurally sound he says.  I am thinking about getting a second opinion though because.  He was quick to hand me the script without anthing else being said just to come back in a month and we will see how that is doing.

I think I feel that if everything is ok then why the script . I took it to ease them and it does help but I still have this nagging that maybe I dont need to be on this medicine.

By the way you can always ask your doctor for another beta blocker.

Also, clear up with your doctor if the treatment for your premature beats is treating symptoms or reducing risk. The first is by far the most common.

It's completely meaningless to treat one set of symptoms and replace them with something worse. I wouldn't think even the doctor in the world best paid by pharma companies would think otherwise. Sorry for my somewhat sarcastic approach here, but it seems to me that some doctors are far too eager to prescribe meds rather than providing reassurance.

You should clear this up with your doctor. Why do they treat your premature beats?

I tried several BB's back in 2009 and couldn't tolerate anything but Inderal.

My first dose of Toprol landed me in the ER with very low bp and HR that wouldn't regulate higher than 70/40 & 40 for over 11 hours.

Zebata wiped me out and I couldn't function but didn't have an effect on my bp as much so they switched me to something else I can't remember which tanked my bp again and then finally they tried Inderal.

6 months ago my new dr switched me to long acting Inderal which has worked ok until he upped my dosage to 120mg it was too strong so I had to go back to 60mg capsules twice daily.

I'm curious why the dr thinks your heart will weaken over time? are you having other issues than arrhythmia's? or is he saying the meds will do it? if not; there's a good reason he wants you on the meds and if he thinks your heart will weaken, it's a good idea to listen to him or get another opinion so that doesn't happen...your heart weakening could lead to awhole new set of issues and problems.

I dont really get the racing heart at least if I do I do not feel it.  Just pvc and pac and alot of them.  Could be sitting, standing, laying down, running doesnt really matter they are there.  I feel this drop in my chest and know that its happening then I panic and well all hell breaks lose with anxiety and stress.  I took the acebutolol to help with that and it seems to but I feel terrible on them.

Thank you all for your input it helps a great deal for me.

I have no problems at all but my dosage is very low (25 mg metoprolol or 20 mg propranolol). I take them to avoid rapid heart rhythm mostly caused by stress.

My blood pressure can be amazingly low (95/60 in the morning, 105/65 in the evening) but it seems to regulate properly both with exercise and when standing up. Only time I get discomfort caused by a low blood pressure is when I stand up too quickly from bed. I've established a routine where I sit on the bed for 5-10 seconds before going to the bathroom. Both my BP and heart rate rise with exercise like it's supposed to. I had low BP also before taking beta blockers.

If I should mention problems, that would possibly be that when I'm NOT stressed, my heart rate can be fairly slow (high 40s and low 50s during rest) which may provoke some benign premature beats (mostly PACs I think). But I would prefer some premature beats when I'm calm rather than a racing heart with lots of premature beats with stress.

My do not come in tablet form they come in capsules so i can break it in half or anything.  I am giving it the full 2 weeks and calling him.  He said I could take one pill a day if I wanted.  His concern is that my heart will weaken over time and heart disease funs in my family.  But I feel that if there is nothing wrong with whats going on then why the BB I am going to ask him if I can switch the acebutolol is fine until later in the day I start to feel like crap although I have when from everyday constant to just a few aday.  My BP was good now its low from the bb

My answer is virtually the same as DeltaDawn. It upsets my stomach terribly and I'm dizzy most of the time because of other things, but I take 1/4 tablet in the morning and another 1/4 after dinner or before bed. If I have a bad day or a bad run I take another 1/4 and 2mg of valium which seem to work well together and everything calms down. When I first started I said i couldn't take it but I was started on a whole tablet and it was too much. It did take a couple of weeks to get it right and it's made such a difference to my life you wouldn't believe it. Try the lower dose and persist for a while - I can't cope with the SVT's and this has reduced them by 90%.

I was dizzy and tired at first.  I could never take a (even 25 mg.) whole tablet of Atenolol, because my blood pressure would drop too much.  My primary care dr and I worked out a system of my taking 1/4 tablet at a time, keep track of bp and hr.  It worked for me for 7 years to control Afib.  My cardio said Atenolol does not pass the blood brain barrier, so causes less dizziness.  It might worth a try for you. On the other hand, I would think after 2 weeks you could be weaned off of it pretty easily.  You could always go back on it if it didn't work.
