Weaning off beta blocker metoprolol

Weaning off beta blocker metoprolol

I had hyperactive thyroid which gave me a fast heart rate and they put me on 25 mg metoprolol 2x per day since Feb 2008.
Had thyroid surgery this Nov 28th adn everyone assumed I can now go off the beta blocker and heart rate should go back to normal
Did 2 weeks of only 25mg 1x per day
Now 3 days ago doc says take the 25mg pill and cut it in half 12.5mg and take every monring.
But my pulse is back up to the 80s and low 90s. It goes in episodes,it races for aobut 30 minutes and then settles ot the 80s again. The 90s is really bothersome.
Since he is now gone until new year, I"m not sure if I should go back on 25 1x per day or just wait this out and keep plugging away with the 12.5 and see if it eventually evens out - how long would that be typically?
thank you for any advise....

Hello...

A HR in the 80's to low 90's really isn't considered a tachy state (what activity are you doing when you check your pulse)? I would continue to do what your Dr suggested. If you notice your rate continues to increase, I'm sure that there is a Dr covering the practice while he is away...

I would continue to take the Metoprolol as your doctor instructed. In August I was taken off sotalol and put on Toprol 25mg twice and day, then in November my EP cut it down to 25mg once a day. At first I felt my heart race, but eventually it did stablize. In February I am hoping to been taken off the toprol completely.

Hi I was on metoprolol only 25mg for i believe about 6 or 7 weeks but because it caused to many really awful side effects i was then put on cartizem but for the first few days because i went straight from the metoprolol to the cartizem my hr would suddenly go up to 100 to 106 but then my hr started to go to the normal range and now only sometimes does it go up a little higher than whats normal. Its very likely its the change in your dose causeing your heart to race a little but if it dosent get better soon or before you can see your doc go to the er but the hr of 80,s and 90,s is within whats normal.

does anyone have problems with increased mucus in nose, maybe sinuses or trouble swallowing with all the mucus so causes food to come back out at meal time, and for some time after, at least till nap time. Has to blow and blow and carry a cup for 'stuff'--
