What Can I Replace Toprol With?

What Can I Replace Toprol With?

Hello,

I'm 55 years old and have a history of pvc's, pac's, rapid heart beat and all of them together at times.

In the past, I've tried several beta & calcium blockers and nothing worked until I was put on Toprol.

Wonderful medicine for controlling all the problems, and it even lessens the amount of andrenaline I produce, because I tend to produce too much.  I've been diagnosed with MVP Syndrome, which affects the autonaumic nervous system also.

BUT:  The Toprol has, over the years ... caused me to be very depressed.  It also makes me more tired than usual and not able to exercise as I need to.  The depression is lifted, when I cut the pill in half .. but after about 6 days, the symptoms begin to get much worse, and I'm unable to live with them.

Sooo .. I feel like I'm caught in the middle.  On the one  hand, I'd love to get off the Toprol all together, so I can have more energy, exercise hard (need to lose weight) and get back to my old 'happy' self, but the symptoms are so BAD, when I attempt to ... I have to go back on the whole pill.

By the way, I'm on 50 mg. a day.

I've tried many of the blockers ... but is there anything you can suggest that comes closest to Toprol?

Do you have any OTHER suggestions for me?  I've looked into ablation a bit, but just not sure that's something I want to chance.

Thank you for your help.
Diana

Diana, I don't have much to say re. your question but I will comment on my experiences w/Toprol XL. I was only taking 25mg for PVC's and  did not notice any reduction of those at all while I was on it. Maybe I should have increased the dose but I hated the way I felt...not depression per se but just an over all yucky feeling. I did not seem to have much get up and go and as a result of that 'gained some weight. At times, I would have what I call 'brain fogs' too. Maybe it was all psychosomatic b/c I hate taking meds of any kind. My cardio then tried varapamil and that did nothing either for the palps. I am not on anything at this time. I hope you get some answers to your question and I hope too that you feel better.

I have had all the heart issues as you. 3 years ago, after a 4 hours episode of SVT ended in emergency room at Sacred Heart Pensacola FL. I was referred to cardiologist (Bourganelli) one of the originators of the cardiac ablation procedure.. A month later I had the procedure which lasted about 45 minutes. (I did have to stay through the night in order for them to do their 6 hour post op watch and review.). Anyway, I have not had an SVT event since the procedure. However, I do still have occasional pvcs, sometimes worse than others. Just recently let them talk me into going onto Toprol 25mg. I don't notice much difference for the past 25 days. I will probably stop taking altogether after my next consultation. GOOD LUCK - with your journey thru this.
