Hi Ive been on 50mg of atenolol for almost 2 years, and have never experienced any side effects other than being tired .I did look on my pharmacy paper ,and did read that rash,itching/swelling is under serious side effects, especially on the face.I would have your friend call the doctor.

thank you for the responses.. i finally talked him into going to the E.R. and they said it was a allergic reaction they put him on an iv pumped fluids and gave him a shot of some kind of steroid and some bennadryl a little after that he returned to normal color and he wasn't so lethargic it was amazing.. its like i watched him come back to life..lol.. so he was able to come home..the next day he was so worn down he could barely move! but he is doing much better now and back to his original med.. again thank you!

I take Atenalol but only half a 25mg  a day for SVT's. 2 x 25 is a fair whack of a dose and would knock me out. It slows the heartrate and I think affects the vegas nerve. Definately sound like an allergic reaction....he should contact a doc straight away and see what they say
If its for blood pressure alone there are specific drugs for that and maybe the doc will prescribe something else/

I've been on Atenolol 8 years, never had anything like this.  I agree -- sounds allergic.  Get help ASAP.

I am NOT a doctor, but it sounds like an allergic side effect, and I recommend you immediate discuss with the doctor.  If you can't get the doctor a trip to ER should be considered.

Some people have bad reactions to some drugs, these reactions are way beyond what one considers "normal side effects".

Again, I don't know, but think you should get immediate medical advice.

Hope it is nothing but a passing side-effect.
