cardioversion risks and rewards

I'm a 51 year old male with atrial fibrulation that has continued for at least two years.  (possibly longer)  There are no acute symptoms.  I do feel exhausted, and have trouble sleeping.  I'm contemplating cardioversion and wondering what the chance of recovery is.  Does this procedure have any measurable percentage of efficacy?   Are there risks to the procedure?  Is it better to do nothing at this point?  A complete heart exam, (ultra-sound, EKG, and Holter monitor) revealed very erratic rythm but no observable structural heart damage.  I'm confused about the next step.  Any clarity and advice is appreciated.

The term cardioversion is too general to reply to directly.  If you are talking about using drugs or electric shock, then I'd say "go for it".  Electrocardioversion has given me extended periods of sinus rhythm, usually lasting about 18 months.  I've always returned to AFib.   This procedure no longer works for me, the reason is understood but that's another story.

I believe the risk associated with the Electrocardioversion is minuscule, so small as to not worry about.

I am currently living with AFib, taking drugs only to control my heart rate.  My symptoms may be similar to yours.
