clickin noise in the heart and is startin to hurt

there is a clickin noise coming from my ex partners heart only  when sittin in certain positions its also causein his heart to become irregular which is causin discomfort and pain when the click starts, his been a alcholic and has recetly given up drinkin and is also a smoker. he is worried about this problem and really does not know what to do or what it maybe. how quick should he should get this checked out?

If you can actually HEAR something without the aid of a stethoscope, I'd go ASAP to either your doctor, or a hospital.  Don't wait on this!

Im wondering that this clicking noise could be a muscle or tendon popping everytime he inhales or exhales.

If it's in rhythm with his heart beat, it may be a damaged heart valve. He needs to be seen by a doctor. If it's in rhythm with his breathing, it could be some mucous rattling in the lungs. Again, he needs to see a doctor.
