drug reaction

by heliflo, Dec 12, 2008 06:49AM
in 1998 had a bypass that did not work they put a defribilator in 2000 which has worked well up to august this year i was rushed in with a heartbeat of 161 they put me on amiodrone straight in the arm for three days my defib went off twice but did not bring me back into rythem they rushed me to Barts in London where they took the drip of amioderone straight out of my arm because it caused flebitis and put me on oral amioderone took me off warfarin and gave me enoxaparin injection till the warfarin had worn off they gave me another drug bisopralol with the amioderone i had an episode where the heart went to 199 beats per min one dat when i was in hospital dr came up tweaked my defib and brought me down to just over 50 beats per min which made me feel great. They tried an ablation but could  not find the cause of the storms they found by tickling my heart something that should be there and took me up to 270 beats i then had to be shocked back they said they wont go on ant further as it might open a can of worms and said drugs are doing the trick which id been on before three weeks in hospital i felt very well a little dizzy on the way home, I went to drs as a formality as we just moved. He said about the amount of tablets i was on and changed two of them for a cheaper version,I was on lansoprazole gastro tabs he then changed them for omeprazole as they were cheaper also i was on atorvastatin he changed me to simvastatin .My feet and ankles started to swell and peel went back to the dr told me to come off bisopralol in case it was that that caused the problem i said to him what happens if i go in to fast rhythm and he shrug his shoulders i came home rang barts and they said if i was going to have reaction it would have happen while i was in hospital i was told by barts to try to half tab legs got to stage were they were weeping went back to doctors and he put me on antibotics after few days cleard up but a rash had started to now they tell me it could be exma (eczema)     but it at the top of legs all over back & belley. i had my first hart attack when i was 35 they put me on diazipam which same gp told me they were addictive try to stop them i am 60 now  i would like to know your views as i feel very depressed at the moment and no-one is listening to me. The rash looks more like stinging rash and irritates like mad hope you can throw some light on this for me.  heliflo

Sorry to read about your very difficult times.

Obviously you situation is very complex and the best anyone may be able to do is comment on one or two aspects.

I got lost in the medications, so I'm not sure what you're doing about the "stinging rash". It looks like it woujld be a good start if we can get some help with some relief recommendations for the rash...as you may have said it may be related to one or more of your medications.  I think I'd need a flow-chart or matrix of some type to connect the "dots" on what you're taking and not taking.  Maybe you'll want to focus on something like the rase and restate just what's going on relative to that difficulty.

My response may kick some other input that is more helpful, I hope so.

thaks for coming back to me as for my skin rash dr gave me liquid parafin empllient to rub on my feet and legs at first .Htis seemed to work well on my feet and legs at one stage my legs had to be bandaged because thet were weeping .Antibiotics seemed to help to calm it down .Next came the cortisone cream Dermovate, now I am on Eurax for the intense itching I am also on antihistamines at bedtime or I would not sleep at all My wife says I still scratch in my sleep.I am getting angrier by the day as the drs dont seem to be able to get on to of it.And to try to get to see a dr that knows my complications i have to book up three days in advance.I have tried myself stopping the Omeprazole to see if this is the cause.

Well, no surprise, you've tried everything I might have recalled, and then several I have never heard of.

Have you studied the published side effects of all your medications, e.g., the Omeprazole?  I would guess yes, if not it is worth a try in the effort to self diagnose, given the problem medical science seems to be having.

Have you posted the itch problem on the dermatology community?  I'm not sure what they discuss there but it may be of some help.  This community is at:

As much as your meds have been changed around seems it could be one of the meds as you said the rash started after they were changed and i know a rash can be an allergic reaction.Im highly allergic to certain antibiotics and one i wasent expected to be allergic to as it wasent in the same class of antibiotics i had a mild reaction to at the er not long ago it turned my arm beet red the instant they put it in my iv and the ones in the class of antibiotics im highly allergic to taken few yrs ago caused severe reactions like pounding heart sudden drop in bp severe itching and rash difficult breathing.Ithink you  may be having a moderate reaction to one of your meds but not sure or could be an interaction going on with one of your other meds.Be firm with your doc because somethings not right and your doc should help you instead of  shruging his shoulders as if its not his problem or acting like the problem is not a big deal.Maybe you should see an allergist to see if that will help.

I was on simvastatin 20mg tablets and developed a rash that itched and burned like crazy. I ran out 10 days ago and now my rash is gone. I looked up simvastatin on the internet and found out from the MedicineNet.com site that "A serious allergic reaction to this drug is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of a serious allergic reaction include: rash, itching, swelling, dizziness, trouble breathing. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.". I'm obviously not a doctor (actually, I'm unemployed), but it sure sounds like what happened to you and me.

Good Luck,

Jim
