I have not heard of dilzam.  However, I had a high pulse rate.  That's what the doctor's told me, anyways.  They started me on Atenolol 25 mg a day in 9-07.  Please, do not let them talk you into this.  I dread the day that I started on this medication.  It slows down your heart by blocking adrenaline.  The bad thing is it is difficult to reach target heart rate when exercising.  I wish I had never started on it.  My blood pressure has been increasing while on it.  Ironic, in that is supposed to lower blood pressure.  I am working out now to lower heart rate, hopefully.  I have read on other sites, that exercise is the best way to lower heart rate.  Also, they say that high cholesterol may increase heart rate.  Try to bring down cholesterol and exercise more.  I always have exercised, however, did not concentrate enough on the cardio end of it.  Weight lifted too much.  I think that was why my heart rate was too high in the first place, overtraining.  However, now I have found Heart Zone training (look into this, a book by Sally Edwards).  It breaks up heart rates into 5 zones.  Zone 3 (70-80% of your target heart rate) will give you improvements in cardio fitness and help to lower your heart rate.  Get a heart rate monitor to follow heart rate.  When I used to work out, I was in Zone 4 and even 5 too often and overtrained.  This Heart Zone training has helped me out in lowering my blood pressure and keeping an eye on my pulse rate.  I would strongly encourage you to adopt an exercise program.  Hope things get better.
