long heart pause before PAT episode
hello everyone~ I thought I 'd try again, because noone responded earlier
I have had pacs and pvc's plus PAT for over 20 years. I am 47. I see my doctor every year for echo's, stress treadmills etc. I have a structurally normal heart. I've worn moniters that have picked up 6 pvc's in 24 hours and some that have picked up 100's in 24 hours. The one thing it has never picked up is the nasty pause before the PAT. Has anyone ever felt a 3-4 second pause, then wham the heart kicks into a fast beat sometimes up to 200 beats/min? I know I've talked to tickertock about this. I don't get this very often. As little as 1 to 2 times a year. But of course it just happenned about an hour ago and now I have to deal with the fear for a few days. That pause, I hate it! It is different than that short pause between pvc's. Does anyone experience this? How long does a pause need to be before you need a pacemaker?

I know this thread is old, but I wanted to comment on your SVT experiences (from your post dated: Aug 08, 2007 05:47PM). I've had PVC's for just over a decade, but in the last year or so I've noticed these short runs that seem to be set off by the premature beat, last for a few seconds (enough for me to sit up, wonder what's going on, then pound my chest once or twice), then I get that big, heavy beat I normally associate with the follow up contraction after the PVC.

I know how you feel! It does feel like an much longer pause than the extra beat pauses thats because usually after the extra beat the sinus node takes over agian but when the extra beat causes the extra pathway to conduct electricity and start an svt episode the pause is longer. In fact if you notice there is a long pause or hard thump when the svt stops too and the sinus node takes control again.
I'm glad someone can relate. I never feel that pause when it takes control again. Just that first one. But that is enough. I bet it is almost 3 seconds. Sometimes I don't think I feel anything, then there is that faint jackhammer heartbeat which gets harder and more eratic the longer the svt lingers.

It sure feels like a much longer pause than the extra beats pause. I get early beats every day and those do not feel like that longer pause before the svt. I kind of figured that was what it is, maybe just taking a few seconds more because it jumps over to that other pathway. This pause makes me feel like I am fading out for a second, it makes me jump up and yell at my heart to start again.

I get the pause just before my heart goes into svt!!! It won't be caught on an EKG because its just an extra beat and then the electical impulse "jumps" into the extra pathway causing the SVT taking over the sinus node this is what causes th pause feeling. Some people with svt are aware of the pause and some do not notice it all. It is an extra beat either pvc or pac that starts the svt.

Tony, they all said my heart won't "pause"! All in my head. It is my head "pause"!
it night not be that simple...............I still think it needs to be seen on a monitor. but the frequency dictates the expression.............ignorance is bliss.
In the case of my afib, it usually triggered by PACs. So often I'll feel several PACs first, which appear as pauses in heart rate. Then after a couple pauses, the afib starts.
Darn, I wish there was an edit button so I didn't have to post again. What I mean by tachy times is the real deal, not just increased heart rate because I'm carrying a bag of groceries. You know how it feels - the regular thump-thump that just changes to pit-a-pat-a-pit-a-pat-a and you get that weird pressure in your chest.
No, I don't get any pause before my heart goes tachy. It just turns on. Since my ablations it's a bit more predictable though. I can count on tachy times if I carry something heavy, if I walk uphill, if I rush around at work or home or grocery store, etc. I still have times when it just gets excited all by itself (LOL) and I wait it out. Oh well.
too bad this can't be caught on a monitor..that would determine if you needed a pacemaker or not..........your tachy could be an escape rhythm...Of course, it is highly unlikely you could catch this on a monitor if it only happens a couple times a year..........I don't think a pacemaker would be justified for such an infrequent event.

First off I have PAC's, PVC's and PSVT (same as PAT). What I find interesting is that you said you have a structurally normal heart with so few PVC's and an occasion bout of tachy yet the doc runs so many tests on you every year. I wonder why that is? I have 2 cardiologists and a regular doctor but I never have to deal with the cardio's unless something changes. I visit my regular doc every 2 years, she asks how my heart is doing and I simply tell her - the same as always. One winter my heart changed and was doing 15-25 premature beats (both variety) every minute instead of my usual 1-6 per minute. I called her, had to wear the stupid monitor at that point and found out it was just more premature beats than usual. Life goes on.
As for the pacemaker - I think people require one if they develop bradycardia (a very slow heart beat) or some kind of heart block. There maybe more reasons but not usually for the run-of-the-mill PVC's and occasional tachy. Maybe someone with more pacemaker experience will chime in.

I always have pause in my heart during sleep. Mostly happen around 3:00 - 4:00am. It wakes me up and I felt no beat at all. You wait.....and wait.... Oh it comes. I also have PAT/SVT but is a very short bout.
The 24 hours holter said I got a 3.2 second pause which was in the afternoon 2:14pm but not in the night time. The pause happened after my SV-Run 253 bpm at afternoon 2:02pm.
I just find out recently. The pacemaker can cause a healthy heart to fail. If you want one, I can and more happy to give mine one to you. FOR FREE!
