lub dub..lub dub.. lub lub dub???

A friend took my blood pressure following a run, =136/74, pulse =74, listened to me breath and to my heart. About once every minute or so my heart has an extra sound...lub dub..lub dub..lub lub dub. I have no medical issues. I am 24 y/o male, 200 lb, 6' 2", I have never smoked, excessively drank alcohol, or done any illegal drugs. I run 1-2 miles several times a week, and exercise regularly. I've never experience palpitations, dizziness, tingling, SOA, or chest pains. I have an extensive physical for pre-employment with a police dept, now, I am worried sick this may cause me problems. Is this unusual? Please.....I have one week to worry about this.

You sound healthy to me.  I don't know what the requirements of a police physical may be.  I assume you'd surpass most of them given what you've told us.  I also believe that some irregular heart beats are very common, and as said I don't know what the police requirements would be.  My guess is there are many officers with Premature Ventricle Contractions (PVCs) which MAY BE (I am not doing a diagnosis) what you have.

In any case it is good to have it checked out with a doctor.  If you don't have any symptoms I'd not tell a police doctor (or doctor doing police physicals) what a friend heard when he was listening to your heart.  Let the doctor listen in his/her normal way.

Good luck and hope you make it and become a fine police officer.  We need strong police departments with young up-coming officers.

Hey, I commented on your last post but I will comment again so perhaps someone else will. If you have no symptoms it is unlikely to be a problem. For example, I have over 4,000 skips a day. I have even had up to 30 in one minute. Please dont panic. Lots of us have them. Obvously we are not doctors and the only way to know for sure what is causing yours is to see a cardiologist.  Dont panic. :)

Sounds like you don't really need to worry! But just to be sure you should mention this to a doctor. Sometimes there can be normal splitting of the first (S1) and second (S2) heart sounds, making either the lub lub dub or lub dub dub sound. If they are widely split sounds it could be a sign of something that needs to be looked at.

There are also extra heart sounds, S4 - which is heard right before the S1 and another extra heart sound, S3 - which is heard right after the S2. Sometimes these extra heart sounds can be a sign of something more serious, but I also think that they can also be normal in younger people.

Only a doctor would be able to determine after listening to your heart which is the case for you. But since you are in good shape with no symptoms, yours is probably just a normal splitting of the heart sound or as others have mentioned before, a premature beat, which can also be normal in a healthy person.

Good luck with your career!
