maximum heart rate

by quercus, Nov 07, 2007 12:07AM
Hi, In the last 2 years I have been taken Atenolol to control my heart rate and aspirin for the thinning of blood. My pulse is between 60 to 75 and Bp 110/75 some times lower.
I am 50 and have been always physically active in sports.Recently about a year ago I took up cycling and have been monitoring my heart rate. My max heart rate should be at 153.I ride a 100 miles a week and been getting my heart rate up to 210 when climbing steep grades not often but it hapens. My average heart lately have been 133
I am scheduled to wear a heart monitor for 24 hrs this thursday. Is there anything they can do to help this sitauation? What is happening to my system when I am over 153? The heart count fluctuates from high to lows in a matter of seconds.

Well at age 50 I can say that a heart rathe of 210 is WAY to high, and a resting rate of 133 is tachycardia.  If that is your average rate while working out that is perfect.  But if it is a resting rate it sounds like you might be suffering from Atrial Flutter.   If it is Atrial Flutter they can do an ablation for that.  My brother had flutter (he's 65 and a runner) and it worked fine for him.

I am 52 and I'm on atenolol as well.  But I take it because I had an ablation for AFIB and I do it more for maintenance to keep the blood pressure lower so I don't develop any needless stretching of the pulmonary veins.  My general exercise heart rate is between 130 and 140.  At that rate I can talk and feel comfortable.  I can go for about 60 minutes at that rate.   My resting heart rate is about 50 to 55.   When I press my rate above 150 I know I am starting to over work.
