need advise

I m seeing a cardio doc next week for heart rate problem.Awhile back my doc put me on a beta blocker that caused heart arithmias so he put me on cardizem which worked well untill i had bowel surgery which left me with so much scar tissue in my lower colon i now have cronic severe pain and have to take narcotic medicine dailey sometimes one sometimes 2 pills a day but its causing my heart rate to swing up and down, very scary.I need advise about what i should ask the heart doc.I just dont really trust docs a whole lot anymore to know what they should do because they are so quick to get to the next patient or at least thats how my regular doc and my gi doc are,They never give me time to ask questions.Lately i cant seem to get throu a day without checking my h/r about 20 times a day and im scared if its a little to high and scared if its a little to low. Thanks all..

Fear is the enemy -- it makes you pump out adrenaline, which makes your heart go faster.  Keep asking questions until you get answers.  My doctor once told me, "if I don't hear from you, I assume everything is okay -- it's up to YOU to tell me it's not."  Unfortunately, I think this is universal -- they're all overbooking and seeing more patients than they have time for.  I was always told 60 to 90 was normal, but I think that was without medications and rhythm issues.  Sounds like you have several issues, and that does help, but keep asking.  Maybe they'll answer just so you stop bothering them.  Take advantage of nurses, nurse practioners, anybody who has the doctor's ear.  I wrote the cardio's nurse a letter once and she called with the answers after talking to the doctor, took a week, but I got my questions addressed.  Hang in there, there is hope.  If you have to look for another opinion and maybe another doc.  Good luck.

Thanks Jerry,My heart rate will beat like really fast for a few minutes then suddenly its beating really slow, not constantly but enough to scare me.It just dosent seem normal. It does this off and on during the day sometimes its just normal though for awhile.I dont know maybe i just stress about it to much.I know i need to be connected with better doctors though. The gi doc i seen was in and out the door so fast its a good thing i dident blink, lol.I just hope the cardio doc gives me more time so i feel im getting the right test or treatment. My reg doc that recomended me to him wrote on my papers that im to be treated for SVT? I dont even know what that is.

What do you consider a "little too high" or "too low"?

If your resting rate is between 50 and 100, I'd say it isn't in a danger range, I am  not at doctor.

What do you mean by arithmetic?  Is the HR irregular, seems to have extra or missing pulses in an otherwise regular pulse pattern?

If your condition is rather continuous your doctor should be able to hear them directly and even catch them on an EKG.

I'm not sure why your doctors will not give you any time, maybe you need to look for other doctors.  My cardiologist and my primary care seem willing to discuss my condition with me in detail, and they get paid the Medicare Rate in my case.  I think most private insurance pays more than the Medicare Rate.... mine did.
