palpitations, shortness of breath

hello everyone. im a 26 female and have been having palpitations for the last 10 yrs or so. i realize this is a common and usually harmless issue so i really havent paid any attention to them. but over the last few months i have started experiencing chest pain and shortness of breath when running (something that ive been doing for the last few years with no problem). also, ive woken up in the middle of the night a few times in the past few weeks having shortness of breath which seems to be a bit better when i sit up or prop up with pillows. laying down flat feels like im being suffocated. i really dislike drs so before i do anything drastic (like call one) i wanted to know whether it sounds like something i should get checked out for. any suggestions?

I am 43. I have had IST for many years and take 50 mg of atenolol daily. I started having an increase in palpitations and runs of increased heart rate a few weeks ago. They started coming closer and closer together. I also started having times when I get really hot. I am usually a person that is ALWAYS cold. Then last Monday I almost passed out at work twice. I took Magnesium twice as it acts as a natural calcium channel blocker. I work 12 hours 3 days a week in the health care field. Anyway the next day at work I had another episode of increased heart rate took another Mag but con tined to feel poorly. It progressed into shortness of berate, chest pain and nausea that didn't go away. I called my electrophysiologist's clinic to be seen and was seen in the Er. Where my tests were once again in the normal range. Anyway I was put on oxygen which seemed to help with the chest pain oddly enough. Anyway I haven't felt well all week. Still have the anuses and continue with palpitations and runs of fast heart rate. I am wearing a 7 day holter monitor. Still having shotness of brath. Did have some blue lips on Sunday with the shortness of breath noticed by my little girl. On Sat. got the bright idea to go grocery shopping and almost passed out shopping when my heart rate sped up. Then today had to take my little girl for an xray and actually did pass out when we went back to get her xray done and my heart sped up again. Of course I was then transported to Er where I actually went into a run of SVT that corrected on its own but continued to go up and down several more times. To say I feel terrible is an understatement. They never have caught a true run of my IST on a monitor. So could it be that this is a form of SVT or is it truly IST? They did call it SVT in the ER. I just know I feel horrible and want it fixed. It seems I have an episode bad enough to go to the ER every 6 months to every year. How bad does it have to get before something more than tweaking my meds happens? I want my life back! I can't exercise and haven't been able to in a lomg time! I use to take karate and was a black belt recommended. Of course I had to stop due to back injury but my point is I like to exercise. I can't even do Wii sports with my Kids! This is terrible. I haven't even been able to work this week and I live my job! Who can usually say that?

Hi everyone
I went a couple of years with shortness of breath when i tried to go to bed. I let it go then the shortness start coming just from walking and then working then everything was a lot. my boss had to send me home because he said i was like a fish out of water gasping for air. My dad would ask me to call in I didn't look right, i ignored both. Well long story short I went down to be x-rayed and woke up 8 days later(coma). I was told i had stage 4 MG(Myastenia Gravis) 4 because it was my chest muscles that were attacked EX: I was told my muscles were like a gate that just would not closed when i did't get enough rest. SO PLEASE DO NOT TAKE THIS LIGHTLY.

I'am not a real fan of Dr's myself. Find one that you can talk to, and get some tests done.
If you don't like one Dr., find another. But take care of yourself cause noone else is going to. The best news is when you find out everything is OK.

wow, im very sorry to hear about your husband and mother. i appreciate your advise, although i was hoping youd say to forget about it.. i really hate doctors. i did go several years ago for shortness of breath and they did attribute it to anxiety. its just been an odd occurance here lately for it to wake me from sleep feeling rather like im being suffocated. anyway, thank you. i sincerely appreciate the advise.

Anytime - you've got shortness of breath - absolutely get it checked out!  Even if you find out it's just anxiety - you'll feel better about having it checked out.   Take my word for it - my husband passed away 2 yrs ago from lung cancer and my mom passed away less than a month ago from same.     With earlier intervention maybe things would have turned out differently.
good luck to you
