palpitations without change of pulse?

Hi,

I was wondering of anyone else can relate to what i'm experiencing.
You know the feeling in your throat when your heart skips a beat, a strange tickling sensation.

Lately I'm feeling the same sensation, but when I actually feel my pulse, my heart rhythm doesn't change. It continues beating steady.

I do have a history with PVC's due to anxiety / chronic hyperventilation, so I'm not that worried, but this feels new so I just like to know what it is.

Can heart arrythmias occur without actually feeling a chance of pulse?

There are so many different things that can happen with ectopic beats, juntional beats,...  a few I can think of off the top of my head like concealed extrasystoles and parasystoles (systole means when the left ventricle contracts and causes a discenrable pulse).

I'm taking a bit of a guess, I would say that certain palps can occur without feeling a change in pulse rate wtihout using EKG equipment, though the EKG may detect the timing differnce.

Hi - I have very similar symptoms. I feel my PVCs primarily in my throat, and it usually prompts me to cough or clear my throat to try to abate the problem. My PVCs used to be brief, lasting for only seconds, but over the past six months, I have been dealing with episodic PVCs, where episodes can linger for hours at a time, every few beats. My doctor recorded an episode of trigeminy on an ECG, and at the time, the sensations were primarily the strange beat, or tickle in the throat area. If you have had a full cardiac assessment, and had the health and structure of your heart deemed healthy, I would not be concerned. Sounds like you are dealing with benign PVCs, and/or some sort of hyper sensitivity to your heart beat. Many PVC/PAC sufferers who have worn event or holter monitors have documented times when they sensed or felt the PVCs/PACs only to find the data indicated no premature beats. The mind can certainly play tricks on us. I believe anxiety and fear play a huge contributing role to the incidence and severity of our symptoms. My pulse rarely changes due to the PVCs, and like you, I have often felt the sensation, yet my heart rate remains unchanged. If you read through other posts about Afib, NSVT, VT etc, you will see that all of those conditions involve periods with elevated heart rates, as well as other symptoms. I have been told that PVC/PAC sensations and frequency will fluctuate over time, but whenever you "feel something new" it's always a good idea to mention it to your doctor. However, I am confident that you have nothing to be concerned about. Good luck.

Hi Frederik (Scandinavian? the name seems like that).

Yes, you can have this sensation with normal sinus rhythm. The sensation you refer to is often caused by a heavy normal heart beat. If your heart is beating harder (pumping more blood) often due to stress, anxiety or heavy meals, this may happen.

If you have an ectopic beat in between two normal beats most likely the ectopic beat is not forceful enough to cause a palpable pulse.  So you wouldn't feel the ectopic when you were checking your pulse, your pulse would just feel normal.  But those of us who have been cursed with this hypersensitivity to every little hiccup your heart makes, feel it.  Only way you can pick those beats up is by EKG.   My heart was doing that when I was being monitored once and they were PACs.
