palpitations

hi i am 21 weeks pregnant and today i had heart palpitations it feels as fast as 200 bpm it was scary has this happen to anyone i am scared that something could happen to me

First of all I'd like to say that I don't intend to frighten you further, but thought that telling you what happened with me (I have my bouncing one year old on my lap!!) might reassure you and encourage you to see your Dr.........

I had palpitations when I was pregnant from about 18 weeks. I know that palpitations in pregnancy can be normal so I tried to ignore them. They were worse every evening from about 7 and would get really strong but I still thought it was 'normal'. At 24 weeks I felt very spacey and like I was going to faint while having some on the way home from work and started getting tightenings. Because of the tightenings I phoned the hospital and they asked me to go in for a check.

They found a very irregular pulse and 7/16 beats were premature beats, in couplets, triplets and some longer. I was admitted for a couple of days, had an echo, more ECGs and a holter monitor. Tried without drugs but I couldn't cope so was put on a low dose for the rest of pregnancy and lots of Bub checks. Baby was born at term, nearly 9lbs and is now 1 and thriving!!

If you are at all worried, see your family doctor for a check, as worry won't be good for anyone! I tried to dismiss mine as just something that happens in pregnancy rather than get it checked out - didn't even mention it to my midwife at checks!
