side effects after having a pacemaker surgery

My 63 year old Mom has always been very healthy and active.  She has always had alot of energy.  Recently she traveled from Colorado to Montana and her heart rate dropped tremendously (29bpm).  She was taken to the hospital in Bozeman, MT.  After many tests they decided to put a pacemaker in.  Ever since this surgery she has been Extremely tired constantly and unable to do her normal activities.  Is this a normal side effect after this surgery?  If so, is it expected to get better with time?  Her check up appointment was scheduled for two months after the surgery.  Is that normal protocol?

Thank you, for any advice you can give us!

you should call your mom's dr and tell them asap to see what they say - vomiting could be a sign of anything and fatigue could be from a setting on the PM or maybe something else entirely...either way have her call or you call =)

My brother has passed out four times since getting his pacemaker in April of 09. He has had several return post op visits with his Cardiologist

Is this a normal side effect?

I got a pacemaker on 7-22-16 and it's now7-29-16 and I just got dizzy headed and unable to stand I had chest pain and numbness in my arms, hands and legs , I'm thinking that it was dew to being upset earlyer that day, and stressed out, I am going to ask my doctor about it, I also have one completely clogged vain to my heart, so that could be part of the problem as well,

During this period of extreme tiredness, has she been to the doctor?  Have you CHECKED her rate during this?  If it is not going at the pacer set rate, there could be a lead problem or a sensing problem.  It can take a couple of tune-up visits early on to get the settings to match her individually.  I had mine checked first at 1 week, then at 1 month... then to every 3 months.  Now, at 6.  Plus I have a monitor that went home with me to remotely check on the pacer.  It can just call in a check over the phone and the md office can call me back to be sure it is sensing and pacing per plan.  Definitely, bump up the appt and e seen soooner than later as it may be a very easy answer that she is needlessly suffering through righy now.  Otherwise though, there are other reasons that are possible but it's always best to start with the easiest first.  I have to take a LOT of medicines to go with the pacer as a part of the total cardiac care package.  The meds drop my pressure SO badly that I am often way underpowered too.  That one can't be helped.  There is always a possibility of a med adjustment necessary as well.  Hope you get it answered quick and easy.  The pacemaker was the highlight of '08 for me.  I hope you will find that it helps significantly too.

sometimes these devices being implanted triggers a bodys immune system into overdrive.  thing was sprung on me and told me nothing.  ur mom now has titanium and metal not meant to be in someones body and manipulating the heart to boot.  I went to every soecialist around but everyone medical profession wont admit these things not meant for everyone.  money and kiuckbacks.  lost my disability since this thing supposed to fix it.   ill end up on streets.  no children to help.   luckily ur mom has you.  don't expect her to ever be like she was before.   that's all gone now

Has your mom had the 2 mo check up yet?  If not, I would suggest that you schedule it soon.  I am 60 and have had a pacer for 2 years  and have not had difficulties with the pacer.  However, on March 5, I had the AV node ablated due to difficulties with AFib.  Because of that procedure, I am now paced at 100%.  A couple of weeks ago I developed a problem with the timing pf the pacer and went in for a "tune up" and that solved the problem.

A quick tuneup is well worth the effort to eradicate your mom's problem.

The people I know who have a pacemaker do not complain of any side effects.  I think it may just be that recovery/adjustment takes time.  You said she was scheduled for a two months follow up, has that taken place, or yet to come?

Discuss this with her doctor, is the best approach.

There are many in this Community who have a pacemaker, perhaps you'll get some input from one or more of them.

After having a pacemaker put in at about the same age I felt worse instead of better. I was having adjustments done almost weekly. I ended up in the hospital with terrible chest pain. I was told I had pacemaker syndrome this is very rare when you have a dual chamber pacer. More adjustments were made and I finally started to feel better. I am now 5 years post installation . I am doing fine. Back to my high energy self. They had my pacer set to low at 60. It is now 70. I lived in Spokane Wa. at the time.
I forgot to mention I have 3rd degree heart block. I am paced almost 100%.
