taking antiboiotics with beta blockers and other med...nervous

by iamfaithful, Aug 31, 2008 09:32AM
Hello all,

I recently found out that I have a urinary tract infection and have to take antibiotics for 10 days, 2x daily.  I really don't like taking medication and am very nervous about it; but I have too in order to get rid of the infection.
It's a medication they give pregnant ladies quite often-can't remember the name (nope, not pregnant).  My doctor told me not to worry about taking this with the other meds that I take; metoprolol, aciphex (xanax, but I haven't taken that in a while).  I haven't had the rx filled yet because I don't like taking meds to begine with.  I'm nervous about the side effects.

Does anyone else have experience with this?  Can anyone offer any advice about the med?

I remember being prescribed antibiotics before by my gastro doctor, but one of them had side effects dealing w/the heart and it's rhythm.  So of course I tossed them out, and now I'm nervous about taking any type of different med.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hi iamfaithful,

Over the years, I've taken LOTS of antibiotics and many times I was also taking propanolol.  It was not a problem at all.  In fact, for 25 years, I had to premedicate with a large dose of penicillin prior to dental appointments, no problem.  I'm not a doctor, but the combination is quite common.  No worries : )

Hi,
I also over the years took a large dose of penicillin before dental procedures when they thought I had MVP.  I was also taking a beat blocker  then too-never had a problem. I 'm not a Dr. either but I'm sure there won't be any problem. You have the ok from your Dr. too so that's double insurance. It's important to take the antibiotic to clear up your infection.  If you want even more reassurance, you can always call your local pharmacist and run your concern by them. I have found them so helpful whenever I have questions. Good luck!

I've been on beta blockers for 21 years and I've taken many antibiotics among other meds.  There is no interraction.  I am an RN and worked on a cardiac critical care unit and beta blockers have almost NO ill effects with other meds.

Thanks so much for telling me your experiences!  It really helps me out...being that my mind is always working overtimes.  I have heard of taking antibiotics before dental procedures for some people.  And I definately plan on asking my pharmacist before she fills the rx.

RNRita-I have read post of yours that were dated....I want to say years ago :-)  I was able to pull up some stuff when I first started on this journey.  The forum looked a little different then, but I remember your user name, and also because you worked on the cardiac floor.  Thanks so much for your reasurrance-it helps.
