verapamil side effects and tachycardia

verapamil side effects and tachycardia

I'm at my wits end. Need help! THis is sort of complicated.
I'm sort of new on here. I've had tachyc for over 20 years. . ..Never took anything for it
until 3 years ago . I started taking toprol 3 years ago (old doc) . long story short . . . .new doc
last summer switched me to verapamil. I don't have a blood pressure problem, never did.
He upped the dosage to 360mg SR verapamil . I started on 180mg , .. then 240mg . . and
finally , 360 . ..well I noticed it was thinning my hair excessively  . .I noticed other things . .my nails
won't grow and are fragile, I noticed that I have excessive tingling in my hands and arms
when I lay on them. I noticed that my lazy eye has become worse. .My vision seems
to be a bit fuzzier also.
Question? Can too much verapamil cause the blood supply not to get to my hair, nails,
extremeties, etc? . . First off I don't understand why I'm on verapamil becuase I don't
have a BP problem. and to put me on such a high dose, 360mg ?
What do most people take for fast heart rate that don't have a blood pressure
problem? . . .I also have an adrenal gland tumor which is very small and I was
told it was "nonfunctioning" so they're saying that that is not causing the excessive
out of the blue heart racing spells I deal with. ..
Btw, how come there's no endocrinology forum on here or topics or am I looking
in the wrong place? . I'm thinking that the adrenal gland tumor could be
exacerbating my hormones or heart rate but went to 2 endocrinologist and both
contradicted each other .  .ONe said I had hypoglycemia and other said
no such thing as hypoglycemia without being diabetic.
If I cut back the verapamil to 240mg , will that lessen my hair thinning problem? If so , how
long does it take to go back to normal? Scientifically why can verapamil cause
hair thinning as a side effect?
Does this sound like I need a cardiologist? . .another endocrinologist (3rd) opinion ..?
My family doc is good, not switching him but I feel he's not helping here
becuase the pharmacist told me that 360mg of verapamil is above average for
any customer that comes into that pharmacy. ..That sort of scared me.
I don't know what to do... ..any suggestions or input.
scared , discouraged and tired!

I was taking verapamil for my tachycardia, I'm not sure about those side effects but you can definitely google verapamil and it should explain all side effects... I had an allergic reaction to it so I had to stop it... Now I'm on something I can't pronounce or spell, so I would look it up or even talk to your doctor about it and see if there is something else that you can take maybe a calcium channeller vs the beta blocker... Good Luck

I have the opposite effect that the Verapamil was given to me to lower blood pressure and help with heart palpitations.  I get really crazy side effects such as extreme fatigue, depression (bad), and generally crappy feeling.  Ask your doctor to send you to cardiologist for checkout.

I went to google and did a search on "treatment for tachycardia".  It gives you a crapload of reading but that has never been a bad thing.  You are looking for one that will not lower your bp while stopping the svts.

Good luck.

Also, you can have hypoglecemia without being a diabetic... it can be thyroid, etc.  Google, google, google.  You know something is wrong.  Just because they went to school for many years doesn't mean they are great doctors.  The doctors need to keep up on their training and some don't.

I go in April to see my cardo and we are going to talk about getting off the verapmil, I currently take 120mil per day, but at one time did take 240 which may me feel very unbalanced and almost clumsy. Why cant not these doctors with all this high priced technology find out why our hearts be have the way they do. We all know the triggers but when we are being very careful and the racing hearts and skippy hearts still act up, why? Where is our explanation?.
