Hi. When you wean off of a beta blocker, you must do it slowly and should have discussed this with your health care provider first. If you have, then I'll tell you what I experienced.  Your heart rate will probably go up. This is normal and some people will always have a higher rate.  You may feel some anxious times, and some lightheadedness.  I didn't have the latter, but had the former.  It really is not so bad, and if you exercise, it is better, but be careful when you do because your heart rate will accelerate faster than it used to.

I am weaning off Atenolol--very slowly. On 50mg for BP starting 8 yrs ago. I have had more PVCs since and indigestion. Reading about Atenolol is frightening. I was told by the issuing doctor, I could never get off the med. In the past year, I've had 3 doctors tell me different ways to get off. I finally found a site that made sense to me--go very slowly. Since I've been on for so long, I should be patient and slowly get off--the first 3 wks, I took off 7mg; on the next I am down to 37 mg. Cutting the pill is not easy but I am also trying to supplement with vitamins, minerals, exercise. There are days I feel better than others, but I keep telling myself I can do this and have the current doctor's approval. I appreciate reading how others are coping with PVCs and meds. thanks.

Hi.  I am not sure how you are possibly getting 7 mg off by cutting a tablet.  Only the scored parts are regulated, meaning, if you have a 25mg tab and it is scored, you can be assured that the pill is evenly distributed.  Other than the score, you can't.  There is no reason to cut down on atenelol that slowly.   I was on it for 21 years and cut down 25 mg from 50mg took that for a few days, then went off.  I had no problems.  You can wean by 25 mgs at a time.  If your doctor told you you could never go off this med, he was mistaken.  The only problem is that you may have rebound high heart rate.  After two weeks, I decided to go back on the atenolol because I didn't like how my heart rate felt.  Funny thing is that 21 years ago I started taking it because of my heart rate.  Looks like nothing really changed.  Good luck.
