Will the baby be safe

My mom was just told she had Hepatitis A and my niece just had a baby. She wants to bring her in to see my parents but is afraid my mom might expose her to Hepatitis A. The Doctors told my mom she might have had it for years. What should my niece do.

Hi there,

Most of the people here are patients dealing with hepatitis c virus, with no doctors on board. Although hepatitis a and c sound similar, they are actually very different viruses in terms of transmission, etc.

Hepatitis A, (HAV) is usually transmitted by oral/fecal contact. For instance, a common way to get it is drinking water from a supply that has been contaminated by human waste. It is fairly common in developing countries for this reason.

It can be quite contagious and you should seek the advice of a medical professional before exposing a child to a potentially hazardous situation. You might try your local (city/county) health department for advise.

You may want to have your mom verify that she actually has active HAV as well. HAV only has an

Hep A can be spread a lot easier than Hep C.  Until the baby is vaccinated and a little older, I would keep it away.
