Altering the Course of the Disease

by Julie O., Jun 16, 2000 12:00AM
My father has an interesting problem.  I just flew from Maine to California and am trying to determine the best treatment options for him.  He is 73 and 2 years post radical prostatectomy and radiation treatment.  He started feeling ill several weeks ago and had blood work which showed elevated liver enzymes:
ALK PHOS:  261
SGOT:      374
SGPT:      141
BILI (T)   10

Additionally he had an extrememly elevated AFP at 130,000.  He had had a cat scan and an MRI which showed no evidence of cancer.  The doctors feel he has acute hepatitis but he is going to UCLA to see an oncologist next week.

My question is:
If this is hepatitis,is there any treatment?  How about diet?  It seems like he should have a low fat diet and lots of water, lots of rest and no alcohol but do you have any specific advice on diet?  And what could this elevated AFP mean?  And I know this is difficult to answer, but can you predict the course of his illness at all?
Thank you!
Julie O.
