HEPATITIS B COMMUNITY
Chronic

Chronic

My Mother had HepB when I was born. I however, showed no signs and I don't know if I was even tested. When I was 18, I was tested for HepB and they said I had the anti-bodies already for it.

Fast forward to now. I'm 47 and have Cirrhosis. I have had all my levels under control for about 6 months. I of course, do not drink AT ALL. Recently, I began having joint aches that started with my fingers and worked their way down. I am also very fatigued. The docs have checked for autoimmune diseases, arthrities, etc.. all negative. My last Hep screen taken in Feb was negative. What test could be done to find out if I have chronic hepB and it comes and goes?

sandy, although it sounds like you are treated by specialist, i would like to ask, are you under supervision of a hepatologist or an other doctor with experience of treating Hep B and cirrhosis?  - because this doctor would be the best to answer this question, i think, and should not leave you in doubt about your infection status.

That said, i have read somewhere that the activity of Hep B can be measured for instance via the "e" antigen. If it is there, then the virus is more agressive, if it's not there, then one is just a carrier. Perhaps the doc could also recommend monitoring the virus DNA via PCR to see if there are fluctuations in activity (also to detect so-called occult HBV). But in all cases one has chronic HepB, it may just be less active. (Getting rid of HBV would usually mean mounting up anti HBs antibodies, which you did not report of)

So, i would discuss this whole issue openly with the doc(s). Even more important, did you discuss or try HepB treatment yet, or did the doctor(s) ever propose or outline a treatment plan for you?

all the best to you, Joachim

Thanks so much for your response. I have only had a GI doctor and my PCP. It may be time to be referred to a hepatologist and I should have asked for this when my GI doctor told me that it was out of his realm and to go back to my PCP..which I did and he told me he'd see me in a month. I like my PCP personally, but like my liver better!
Thanks again!
Sandy

I just realized I didn't answer all your questions. The only treatment I am receiving is for esophogus varicies which is just propananol. Abstain from alcohol, low salt, low protein diet, etc etc.
My platelet count is always below normal but my AST and ALT have been in normal range for about 6-7 months (lost track).  My PCP recently did an AMA test but I understand an ANA test should have been done also?  Thanks again for your help. Have a good day. Sandy
