Confused about this article

This article states that after a long term study cirrhosis is cut by 50% on antiviral treatments. I always though anitviral such as TDF, ETV prevent us from getting cirrhosis? Can someone with more knowledge explain.

Antiviral Therapy Offers Long-Term Benefit for Hep B
Reassuring news for patients with chronic hepatitis B (CHB) infection: Treatment with antiviral agents cuts their long-term risk for developing cirrhosis by roughly 50% compared with no such treatment, researchers have found.

The study, by investigators in Taiwan and the United States, analyzed data from 1,446 men and women with CHB, of whom half had received antiviral therapy for the infection. After 10 years of follow-up, 147 patients developed cirrhosis—for an incidence of 9.5% and 16.7% in the treated and untreated groups, respectively, according to the researchers

After accounting for patient age, sex and other factors, treatment reduced the risk for developing cirrhosis by 47% (P=0.0001), the researchers reported. The reduction was 43% after excluding patients who developed cirrhosis within the first year of follow-up (P=0.0045).

“In this large cohort comprised of clinical and community participants with long-term follow-up, antiviral therapy was significantly associated with risk reduction in cirrhosis progression,” according to the researchers, who presented their findings at the 2016 International Liver Congress of the European Association for the Study of the Liver

If you take a look at the abstract of the conference you will see that the most cases of development of cirrhosis happened during the first 5.5 years after starting antivirals, but after very few cases occurred.
The research doesn't mentions the type of antivirals used.
One would assume that cirrhosis developed on patients who already had f3 AND who weren't able to suppress their virus to very low levels while on antivirals. Some of those might had other liver conditions/diseases as well.

and also add that eatin gmo or processed foods or low vit d levels is able to make fatty liver and fibrosis and cirrhosis with nothing to do with hbv

most damaged livers today are not from viral infections
