Epivir effect from father to newborn?

Epivir effect from father to newborn?

Male in 30's.  Just started taking Epivir for my chronic HepB.  Wife tries to get pregnant.  Any concern to the newborn from Epivir through male sperm?

Epivir=Lamivudine, said to be very safe for husband and wife who wish to have children.  But do you have to choose Lamivudine as first-line treatment with its high resistance profile?

Thank you very much for your fast response.  I understood from my family doctor (not a liver specialist) that Lamivudine has the least side effect and is the safest among other medicine types for husband and wife who wish to have children.  And yes, I understand the "high resistance" issue, but given the pro and cons comparing to other medicine, it seems to me that is the best choice to start.  Am I (and my doctor) correct?

Lamivudine is not longer considered a suitable first-line therapy.

Entecavir, which is much better in terms of the resistance issue, is not known to be unsafe for husband and wife who wish to have children.  Please check with your doctor.

Thank you for the response.  2 more questions:

1.
What about Hepsera?  I learn about this medicine from a friend of mine; he is taking this now after Epivir (2 yrs) resistance shown.  His doctor checked his genotype (?) before recommending Hepsera.   Does Hepsera affect pregnancy issues for h

2.
I looked up the website for Entecavir after your recommendation, and it appears it is a newer drug than Epivir, and the result is better in terms of resistance.  Epivir, the the best of my knowledge, is Category C for women, which means to me that "not proven" on human, but proven safe on lab animals.  So, since Entecavir is newer, what is the status of lab testing?  Also Category C?  Since there is no known testing for Men, what is your recommendation (if not about resistance) for the husband, Lamivudine or Entecavir, in terms of having safe children?

I will make sure to ask my doctor on my next visit.  But, would love to hear from other professional for 2nd/3rd opinion.  thanks.

Well firstly, make sure your doctor knows what he/she is doing giving you Lamivudine monotherapy.  There are many factors to consider when deciding treatment, such as you age, eSeroconversion status, DNA, ALTs, current status of liver.  What happened with your friend with the Lamivudine resistance is probably bad management and probably could have been prevented.

Now as to your question.  For women, I read on another medical site that  Telbivudine is recommended.  So if you  have to take meds, ask about this med.  I haven't come across too much on men.  Isn't much studied I guess.

Before going on meds, my doctor asked if I plan to have any more children.  I told him NO, I'm done.  He said, good because taking antiviral is not recommended if you want to have more kids.  I received his message as something like...antiviral interferes with DNA things and making kids involves a lot of DNA building stuff.  So I think it's best to try it being off on meds unless you liver is in bad shape.

Good luck.
