Help with Results

My husband tested positive for Hepatitis B Surface Antigen. He followed up with his doctor and based on blood results was told that it was an acute infection and not chronic. These are the results, can you help me read them and explain why the doctor said its acute and not chronic:

HBV Core Ab, IgM: NEG
HBV Surface Ab: NEG
HBV Core Ab: POS
HAV Ab: NEG

His doctor just said it looks like it was something he recently picked up based on the results. He is following up with a GI in any event.  What does the Core Ab reading positive mean?

Means he has current or past hep-B infection. It needs to be interpreted along with HBsAg reading (in your husband's case, he is infected).

Also since IgM is negative, it is likely he is chronic, not acute.

It may be useful to get AST/ALT, HBeAg, HBeAb, viral load tests done to see if he requires treatment. When your husband meets GI, these can be discussed.

I just spoke with the doctor again and he said he is not 100% sure but he would suspect that its a new infection where the Core Ab (IGG) is positive but that he may be in the six month window where the surface antibody is not present yet. I think he is basing this on the fact that my husband has no history of this and no symptoms, but he said the GI will know further. Also all the rest of the results fell right in the middle of the normal ranges, except the ALT was 41 when the normal is 0-35, but he said that could be anything (my husband is overweight too).

I would like to get an information about my husband's hep B blood test results.

hep B core IgM (HBcIgM) - negative
hep B surface Ag (HBsAg) - positive **
HBsAg value              - 6899.00 IU/ML
hep B surface Ab (HBsAb) - negative
hep B surface  Ab value  - >2.0 mIU/ML    0.0 - 10.0
hep B e antigen (HBeAg)  - negative
hep B e antibody (HBeAb) - positive **

I would like to know, how to read this results and what exactly does it mean. Does he have an active infection and is he infectious to others?
He has the virus since a childhood, the doctors say there is no treatment at the moment to get rid of the virus. I am just curious if there is still active virus and if he is infectious to the public. Does it affect the IVF treatment for us - I have been vaccinated and I am immune against hep B virus.
Thank you very much Marianna.
