Hepetitis B test

I recently had a blood test in order to test for a group of STD's. I noticed that my doctor ordered a Hepatitis B "surface antigen EIA" test even though she asked if I had gotten the vaccine for Hep B and I said yes. The test came back negative. What I am wondering is if I have gotten the vaccine shouldn't this test be positive since the vaccine allows your body to develop antigens. I know I had a hep B test before and it was positive due to this. Could this be a different type of test where it is not looking for antigens but for something else? Or could this have been a mix up in the lab?

Your test showed you do not have HBsAg.  Did you test your HBsAB?

So even if you have had the vaccine for Hep B you will test negative for HBsAg. I think I was tested for the antibodies a few years back and that was positive; however the surface antigen was negative.

Is this normal?

What I meant is, is it possible to test negative for HBsAg and positive for the actual antibodies?
