Lamivudine?

this is a c and p, found this from this site, HepB Introduction and Welcome Page

i just started 4 days ago taken lamivudine, then i saw this article here that i really got worried. does anybody still take this drug? any thought?

thank you.

Previously approved, but no longer recommended:

Lamivudine = LAM (Epivir HBV, Zeffix, 3TC): FDA approved 1998 for children & adults.

Adefovir Dipivoxil = ADV (Hepsera): FDA approved 2002 for adults.

Telbivudine = LdT (Tyzeka, Sebivo): FDA approved 2006 for adults.

These drugs were previously approved, but are no longer recommended for use with Hepatitis B, for various reasons. Some of them lead to resistance (the virus mutates and becomes immune to this and sometimes many other medicines) and some of them have too many dangerous side-effects. If your doctor recommends these, either be fully aware of what you are doing, or change doctors immediately.

tenofovir or entecavir are the only firstline drug for hbv on guidelines since many years, these are the correct choices, no other drugs

insurance is acting like a mafia, lamivudine is cheaper because of of guidelines but they should not be allowed to choose their cheaper choice and make money by damaging their patients health

tenofovir cost in india is from as low as 19usd....and lamivudine is out of guidelines for hbv, what kind of nazy country are you from to allow such distortions of healthcare?

for your situation entecavir is the most suitable drug, low kidneys damage if any and low resistance but if you use lamivudine entecavir cannot be used because lamivudine makes resistance mutations to enecavir too

i think you d best work to improve your kidneys function by supplements as decribed above and look for coverage for hbv drugs which are only tenofovir, entecavir or peginterferon.tenofovir the most potent and entecavir the more suitable to your kidneys status

thanks stef2011,

my doctor told me that i will be fine using it, she will monitor it every six months. but i am stopping it right now.

there is another medication that my doctor want me to take but my insurance decline it, it is the varead, the only way that the insurance will approved it is to take the lamivudine first and if that doesn't work they will approved it.

i spoke to my insurance and here is what they said

tenofovir - not showing in their system i have to get a DIN so they can verify it.
how about ATRIPLA?

thanks a lot

stop lamivudine immediately or switch to tenofovir, it is decades now lamivudine is not used because it can lead to cytopatic hbv mutations that cannot be control with any medication leading to cancer and cirrhosis despite hbsag negative, hbvdna undetectable and normal ast-alt, another reason not to use lamivudine is that it is even totally useless on hbv

the hbsag of the virus mutates to a form where the virus destroy cells directly even without replication

hbv cure is achieved only by sequential treatment of tenofovir and peginterferon add on about 2-3 years later.tenofovir has no mutations, no resistance, most potent on hbv and the only antiviral with effect on hbsag lowering
