Pre core mutant HBV chronic infection

Dear Doctor,
My deepest thanks to you for a reply a while back. I really appreciate your help. I am now feel a little more down with my condition. My doctor just starts me now on Lamivudine 100mg/day for 3 months and may be longer? I did some research on my own and realized that pre core mutant infection, as a group, does more serious damage to the liver? How much of this is true? With my condition, what kind of future complications should I expect?
So far, my liver sonogram, tumor marker are normal with a slight elevation in ALT of 75. Is Adefovir my next step? I read that this drug is in phase III and can deal effectively with mutant infection? Thanks again for your help and time.
