Reposted: HBsAg test result (Att: HepatitisResearcher)

A friend of mine got tested only for HBsAg. Couldn't affored testing the other markers. Here are the result.

Method:Genedia ------- Result -------- Unit ----- Cut-off Rate
Hepatitis B surface--Non-reactive -- 0.5/ S/CU ---- 0-2 S/CU

Remarks:
Non-reactive: 0-2 S/CU
Reactive: > 2  S/CU

I understand that the result is non-reactive. However, there is a concern about the number 0.5.
The question is: What 0.5 means? does it mean this person has got some surface antigens lurking in the blood but not at a significant level. Does this mean that this person had previous infection? Many thanks

No .5 means nothing was found circulating in the blood. The number is a chemical artifact of the test.

The reason we were concerned was because of the range of non-reactivity which is from 0 to 2. We thought that if the result was 0 then that mean no surface antigen in the blood whatsoever- meaning never been exposed. However, 0.5 we thought meant that there were some particles circulating in the blood.

the 0.5 is simply a background result. It means surface antigen was not detected with this test and NOT that just a tiny amount was detected.
