HEPATITIS B COMMUNITY
Should I push for a biopsy?

Should I push for a biopsy?

Hi everyone.  I am new to posting here, but have been following for a while.  I was diagnosed in June with hep B.  After being batted around from place to place, my gastrointeroloist said he was almost positive it was chronic active.  After CT scans and an MRI and ultrasounds, each report said the liver was unremarkable and the spleen was enlarged...i have an increased PT time and my platelet count is low due to my spleen sequestering platelets.  They have refused to give me a liver biopsy to see what damage is done because of my low platelet count and increased coagulation time.  Anyhow, the bottom line is I would prefer to have the biopsy done to be 100% positive of what damage is done to my liver and whether or not I can be treated with interferon, which I would prefer over lamivudine which I am currently taking.  I like the possible results of interferon treatment more and am definitely up for the battle.  Should I try and demand a biopsy?  I also recently found i may have a heat condition with could present similar symptoms as decompensated liver disease...what is your advice?  Thanks. Sorry I am so wordy.

my spleen was measuring at 17cm in diameter.  I request copies to take with me for every appointment i have, so i know what is going on first hand.

This is a complicated medical situation.   I support your desire for both biopsy and interferon, but it  sounds like 2nd and 3rd medical opinions might be appropriate right now.  Get a little dialogue going on between specialists who know what they're doing.  I wish you the very best  possible outcome.  Be well--and please check back in!
