A Tulsa oral surgeon found to have possibly exposed up to 5,000 patients to HIV, hepatitis B and hepatitis C has been permanently barred from practicing.

On Friday morning, the Oklahoma State Board of Dentistry voted to accept Dr. W. Scott Harrington's offer to permanently surrender his license.

My friends and family and colleagues who all know I have it, have no issues shaking hands with me or anything like this. The first thing my new doctor said to me was "I can't get this by shaking hands with you. Nobody can!" and then proceeded to introduce himself and shook my hand. He's very professional. Part of me wants to actually sue my old doctor for these discrimatory remarks. But I have no proof other than what was said in the patient room between him and I.

I was asked the same thing if I was gay or not. Many docs said to me the same thing. Gay. Drug user. Or I used cheap dirty hookers.

Also the black hairy tongue I got most likely from doxycycling  antibiotic. Made few docs ask me if I perform oral sex. And I am  6"2 235lbs sure fit that profile :) But yet they said it to  put me down.

I wanted to touch base on this topic as well. When I went to my original GI doctor for this, he *insisted* that I got this disease from either sharing dirty needles/intravenous drug use or screwing around with dirty hookers. Despite my attempts to tell him that I am 100% against illegal drugs due to seeing family members suffer and die from the substances, and also telling him I was 100% clean and never screwed around, he still insisted I got it these ways. That's why I switched doctors.

I believe they are purposely holding back the cures, as punishment for those who got this disease because they don't feel it's necessary to reward us with something like a cure since we are viewed as "dirty people with an STD" and they want us to suffer. But I can go on with this theory, it's how I feel.

You should definitely get rid of the mercury fillings. They are actually very toxic to your body. All dentists should now practice mercury free restorations. My current dentist is also a holistic dentist and he is very big on this. If you are in the U.S. and in NJ, I can gladly give you his name so you can see him. Not sure on expense though.. I'm willing to bet it's all going to cose the same.

The dentist I see now says he is using high pressure  chambers to sterilize stuff as well as heat. But the guy is very expensive. Charged me $3780 for.a root canal with a crown last time.

I have old mercury fillings I need to get done but 20k is outrageous. Others want about the same. The only thing is left is to drive down across the border to Mexico and have it done there for $2000. But I am nervous to do that.

Meanwhile my medical insurance wont cover it. Going to a free public clinic based on things I saw there Oh man I dont think I can. Exactly because of the cleanliness issue .

Believe it or not, this is how I think I got my Hep B as well... through my dentist. Especially after he admitted to me that he had 3 patients already with Hepatitis B. Most, if not all, of my symptoms occurred about a month after a dental appointment. I still wonder until this day if he was sterilizing his equipment, especially since he was ready to retire.

Oh, and I live in the U.S. and dental insurance only cover $1500 for me as well, so it seems to be the same.

I agree, it's amazing how people label Hep B as an STD. We used to joke about that when we were kids to each other and dated girls... things like "Hope she doesn't give you the Clap or the Hep"... now I realize, this is no joke :(

Something that has been known that dentists are one of the major causes of HBV spread do to not properly sterilizing equipment.

And then we get labeled as sexually promiscuous people.

and these dentists charge a ridiculous amount of money to get teeth done. I was quoted $20,000 to get 8 mercury fillings removed. Now that is living life for them scoring home runs like this on patients! Health insurance covers only $1,500 of it, which really what it costs almost everywhere else except the US!

Health care for profit is just wrong! And as we can see not always = quality. Another thing it point out how many people with HIV and HBV are out there.

So the next time your doctor asks you about how you got HBV, tell them maybe one of the dentists gave me..
