Taking Tenofovir since 2 months and want a baby

Hello

I hope someone can help me here. I registered lately on this site and I hope I can get an answer.
I am female 37 and have been diagnosized with Hep B chronic since I discovered I had it in 1997.
Since then, I ve been told by my doctors that the virus is not active and I do not need any treatment
At end of Nov 2009 my yearly blood tests showed virus activity even though the viral load is still low
58000 copies per ml. My family doctor said he just learnt from a gastroenterologist that they treat now even inactive
Hep B. So I went to see the specialist, he checked me up and said the virus is active and I would have to take Tenofovir 300mg daily and do check ups every 3 months. He also said it is safe during pregnancy..
Now, my problem is, My fiance and I were a bit choked by the new change and a bit disturbed in our plans
as we are both a bit old now and wer craving for babies...My fiance is a bit afrait of taking Tenof during pregnancy
that causes me headaches because our relationship may suffer from that.
My question is: since I have been taking tenof only for 2 months now, can I stop for us to have baby and then start the treatment again? Since almost 13 years that I ve been carrying Hepb inactive the viral load was very low, inceased by 20000 maybe over 4 or 5 years. I believe my very first results were around 20000 copies. I did a biopsy recently and x rays and the doctor says everything looks normal. Please advice me as I am desperate. We both are! What would happen if I stop it, what do I risk?
Also, my fiance is worried about any anomalies the new born may have during childhood even though pregnancy goes well (statistics show no evidence of any negative impacts on taking Tenofovir during pregnancy) how can we predict no impacts later on, any scientific explanation please??

Thanks so much.

Thanks for your answer Cajim. Doctor said I have a healthy liver. Would stopping Tenofovir be harmful really?

I spoke to my doctor and he is says it is safe. It is not allowed officially during pregnancy but the statistics show that there is no harm to baby...There is also a report you could check
the Antiretrovial Pregnancy Registry and the birth defect or abortion rate are similar to the normal borth defect rates (around 2.4%). See this

Now, I don't know about your medication. If Dr says ok then I believe it is fine.

Good luck.

Hello,

I saw your message and I am in the same situation, if I can say that....I take entecavirum by 2 years and we want a baby!! I read that the tenofovir make part of goup B like risks for baby and the pregnant which take tenofovit during pregnancy have a healthy babies, but nothing is not sure in this world... My doctor says that is ok to have a baby during the treatment, but I don't know....
You must go at the doctor and ask what are the risks for the baby if you take tenofovir and pls tell me his response. I understood that in Europe exist 9 case with mother which have a baby health after tenofovir in pregnancy. I am curious that is somebady in this situation.

Thanks for your answer Cajim. Doctor said I have a healthy liver. Would stopping Tenofovir be harmful really? Thanks. Sometimes, I think I should have studied the question before starting the treatment but I knew nothing about HBV treatments when dr prescribed Tenfovir, so I feel bad now. I am still relatively young and don`t want to spend my life treating HBV with different medications :(

1.  Many parents with HBV have normal healthy babies as long as proper care and monitoring are done.

2.  Antiviral treatments such as Tenofovir cannot not be stopped at will for fear of flares.

3.  Whether you should stop Tenofovir or replace it with a drug less risky to your pregnancy depends on your liver condition which your doctor/specialist would know best.
