I am posting my results again with more specifics. Can anyone help my determine if I am a carrier of Hepatitis. I am also pregnant and have a two year old and this is such a shock to me. If I have passed Hep to my child or my unborn child I will consider it the biggest tragedy of my life. Please help. My doctors have each told me something different and I feel maybe I should see a specialist.

Ask to re-test HBsAg, HBsAb, and HBcAb.

You don't retest HBV DNA at this point. Confirm your status first.  Good luck.

And try to keep your post on one thread.  It makes it easier for everybody, including yourself.

Sorry...I misread.  You have NO detectable viral load so occult Hep B is not an issue.

Hep B Surface AG  Negative

= you have never been exposed to HepB

Hep B Surface AB  Negative

=you are not immune to HepB

Hep B Core AB total Positive

= Could it be a false result?  If not a positive result indicates past infection with hepatitis B virus.

Could it be that you have never been exposed to HepB and are not immune yet?  If so, vaccination will protect you and your baby.  Make sure you consult your doctor and have the necessary tests done/redone until you are sure about your status.

If your tests are correct t is possible that this is an "occult HBV":

"...identified a population of patients who are negative for HBsAg but harbor low levels of HBV DNA in serum or liver tissue. This has been termed “occult HBV infection.”

You should see a hepatologist.  Get your 2-year old tested but I don't know what the rates of vertical transmission are for occult Hep B.  In the event your child is positive it really WON'T be the tragedy of your life, though it might feel like it for a while.  I was infected at birth or shortly after and I am having a great life.  I am happily  married with 3 children and I appear to be the picture of health.  Many of us here were infected at birth and while we'd rather not have chronic Hep B I think we are all happy to be where we are in general.

As for the baby you are carrying, if he/she gets a shot of Hep B immuno-globulin and the first Hep B vaccine at birth and then finishes the vaccine series there is a greater than 95% chance that your baby will not contract Hep B.

Your results seem un-clear. It could mean 4 different things:

1. May be recovering from acute hepatitis B infection
2. May be distantly immune and test is not sensitive enough to detect low level of HBsAb (or anti-HBs) in serum
3. May be susceptible with a false positive HBcAb or anti-HBc
4. May be undetectable level of HBsAg present in the serum and the person is actually chronically infected

You may want to consider consulting a Hepatologist.

Please see the HepB welcome page for some info on pregnancy concerns and check back here for more replies. There are people here much more knowledgeable than I.
