I feel so fortunate to be able to afford insurance. I work free-lance so I don't have a regular job that provides coverage. Because of my age (63), this is costing me over $500 a month. There have been many years when I used this insurance for nothing but checkup exams with the usual bloodwork. This year I'm getting more than my money's worth. It all balances out in the end, or the insurance companies would run out of business.
In less than two years I'll be eligible for Medicare - that will be a relief!
I have to say I was absolutely shocked at the price tag.
My insurances at first would not cover it - but then went overboard - which was very nice.
But--- even with all that said - Roche - and the other pharmaceutical companies do have sliding scale fees.
Check with the companies if you cannot afford it.
HOWEVER - before you start treatment - let me tell you --- know that there CAN be LONG term side effects.
You need to research this tx completely before taking it.
If I knew how I'd feel 3 months after treatment end - I might have waited a LOT longer to go on TX.
The basic course of treatment is $20,000.
For the interferon/ribavirin both I believe.
However, once you begin to add in the other meds that we need like Epogen at $6,000 for a month supply and Ambien and Paxill and Neupogen etc. I figured out that the cost of my treatment with tests and doctors came to roughly $200,000.
I did treat for 72 weeks though.
Roughly the total cost of treatment probably is at least $80,000 for a typical person I think.
Insurance paid all of it for me (except for some reason when I went to the specialist in the city I paid $600 out of pocket) until I had to extend over the 48 weeks...then they said the additional was "experimental" even though it really wasn't...and Committment to Care paid for the rest of my meds for me.
I even explainned it all to the doctor so he would stop telling people it's a $20,000 treatment (like he told me). By the time you add everything in...it's just WAY more than that.
It's no $200 a month anywhere - each shot alone is worth more than that.
NYGirl, All;
Interesting cost reports and cautionary statements, particularly if Kujerry was infected with Hep C.
The fact that he is posting under the HBV banner, coupled with information provided in the post below:
Kujerry- for instance, there are three Patient Assistance Programs (PAP
I have hep B. The dr. wrote a perscription for Lamivudine, but asked me if I wanted to go more agressive with pegasys, peginterferon Alfa-2a. He said that if I take the injections, pegasys, that I would have a 25 to 40% chance of clearing the virus.
My only problem is the cost. I don't know what to do if the insurance dosen't cover it. My insurance said they have to get approval from the dr. before they can give me lamivudine since it cost so much. I guess if they don't cover it, I guess I won't be going on treatment.
i sold my jeep to cover cost, also i'm paying cobra since hubby laid off work...i pay out of pocket for meds, riba, and peg2a, a little over $400, a month...Cobra is 333.90. the drug co. have patient assistance which helps...good luck, and best wishes...
ps drink lots of water for the side effects!
