Lamivudine is no longer considered an appropriate monotherapy.  I'm having it tattooed onto my forehead tomorrow.

Not an "exchange"...an exposure to the mother's blood.

Thanks, NashPred, for the head's-up and the kind words.

I'll clarify.

According to the CDC, Hep B is not transmitted in breast milk.  The risk would come if there were an exchange of blood during nursing.  It is not uncommon for first-time mothers to experience cracked nipples (so sorry) from nursing in the very beginning.  But, if the baby has had the HBIG and the first vaccine the risk is largely negated and the benefit of breast feeding far outweighs the risk.  FAR.  You are encouraged to begin breastfeeding at the time of delivery.  Be mindful that shots are administered ASAP so no one can forget  I was a bit of a nag on that point.

I saw your post over on the HepC Expert forum and noticed that Dr. D didn't give the best of advice to put your mind at ease.

Then I noticed you had posted over here and I just knew that Zelly could tell you what you needed to know...she's the best when it comes to the "moms-to-be issues" among other things.

No.  See my comment on your other post and please read the Welcome page where this is discussed.

You may begin breast feeding at delivery.  HBV is not trasmitted via breast milk.

Please read the welcome/intro page.

I nursed all three of my children...one of them for 3 years.  They are all surface antigen negative.  Women with chronic HBV are encouraged to nurse once the newborn has been vaccinated and HBIG administered.

From what I read, HBV does not transmit by human milk.

Best.
