There is a 1% chance that the virus will clear itself without any treatment.

Treatment using antiviral drugs (A) aims at controlling viral replication, not at clearing the virus.

Treatment using IFN (B) aims at helping the immune system clearing the virus.

In terms of demands to the patient, (A) has practically has no demand at all, you just pop in a pill a day and you live, eat, and enjoy life like before.  (B) does demand that you put up with some side effects, but you have the chance of clearing the virus if this treatment is for you.

Either demand is nothing compared with those from this treatment debated passionately in Chinese site not yet confirmed in random multi-center fashion that aims at not only clearing HBsAg and developing anti-HBs but also living a disease-free life!  But boy the demands on the patient!  Not only are you controlled on how much you sleep, how much you drink, how much you exercise, what you eat (you can basically forget about going to any restaurant, save some money), how you cook your food ... it even controls your sex life!  What!!  Is this treatment making monks and nuns out of us?  Not quite, you can have sex once a month.  Is this treatment making vegetarians out of us?  No, meat is eaten, but in a special way.  Boy!!!

If I am interpreted as being pessimistic, that was not my intention at all.  In fact, I have always remained hopeful which is why I am always willing to read about a new treatment and try to understand it rather than accepting antiviral drugs and IFN as the only valid treatments.

Hey, we're all contagious here.

Sorry, sorry, just a little infectious disease humor.

I think cajim was being pessimistic about a particular "remedy" being touted somewhere.

zellyf is partially right: cajim was being "very hopeful" about a particular "remedy" being touted somewhere.
