I don't see how anyone could rule out the possibility, given only 1 blood test.

However, are you aware that lifestyle and habits are not all that determine likelihood of being Hep B positive? Many people contract the virus during childbirth. Has your mother been checked for Hep B?

If you were Hep B positive, your doctor would most likely order additional tests. If you show positive on any subsequent Hep B tests, then it would be safer to rule out the possibility of laboratory error.

Even if the mother is negative it can be acquired in infancy...as is likely in my case.

Yes I am. But in this case the person had gotten a thorough blood test in the early late 80 and was diagnosed only with a case of Polyneuritis.Since there have been few health concerns if any, but mostly related to the previous diagnosis. A recent visit to his general physician garnered a blood test of sorts and we have now been alerted about the hbv positive.  We haven't taken any medical action yet.

It is possible to have a false negative or a false positive.  Take the test again.
