Presentation title: Increased Vitamin D Levels are Associated With Undetectable Viral Loads in Patients With Chronic Hepatitis B. Abstract Su1011]

Most Patients With Chronic HBV, Low Vitamin D Levels Have Detectable Viral Loads: Presented at DDW

By Ric Susman
CHICAGO -- May 12, 2011 -- About 75% of patients with chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection were found to have insufficient levels of vitamin D, according to a study presented here at Digestive Disease Week (DDW) 2011.
“In this outpatient population with chronic hepatitis B, vitamin D insufficiency is prevalent,” reported Katherine Small, MD, Mount Sinai Medical Center, New York, New York, on May 8. “Vitamin D supplementation should be studied prospectively as a therapeutic intervention to increase the likelihood of achieving and undetectable viral load.”
In their retrospective database review of 417 patients with HBV, the researchers identified 51 patients who were positive for HBV surface antigen for >6 months. Of these, serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D was measured in 29.
Any patients who were being treated for hepatitis C or HIV were excluded from the potential sample pool.
Vitamin D levels were analysed according to HBV viral load by the Mann-Whitney-Wilcoxon test.
Twenty-two of the 29 patients had vitamin D levels that were considered insufficient. Of these, 3 had very low vitamin D levels (<10 ng/ml).
In the patients with undetectable viral loads (4 of 5 patients vitamin D supplementation), vitamin D levels were significantly higher than those of patients who had detectable HBV viral loads (29.1 vs 17.0 ng/ml; P =.003).

Digestive Disease Week 2011 is cosponsored by the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD), the American Gastroenterological Association (AGA), the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE), and the Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract (SSAT).

A good one. But sample is pretty small and so far it is only an association.

yes but we dont need full proff since high levels of vitamin d3 can only be beneficial this is what i mean so better keep them at the highest normal range of 60-100ng/ml instead of low range 40ng/ml or deficent at less than 40ng/ml

same thing about cholesterol

I am planning to take Vit D3 5000iu. How shall I take it?
As I have 1000iu capsules, shall I take all 5 at one time like after lunch or shall I take 2 after breakfast and 3 after dinner?
I will check my vit D level in September.
Thanks for your advice.

vitamin d at 50-80ng/ml,

tot chol less than 150, ldl less than 80 and hdl as high as possible minimum 50men, 60 women

puritans pride has vit d3 5000iu, that taken daily should be ok, it is better absorbed with food so you might take them at meals

I am taking vit d3 5000IU for about 10 days and vit K2 (MK-4) for about one month now.
In May blood work, my ALT= 57 iu/ml   and   AST=29 iu/ml.

Yesterday my  ALT= 74 iu/ml , AST 55 iu/ml . Is the increase because of those two vitamins? Is vit d3 activating my immune system?
I am planning to take Hepatitis Technologies medication all 4 types.
Do you think my alt will get even higher because of all those medicine?

my tot chol is 170, ldl is 100 and hdl 60
Vit d3 level can be checked only in September, I'll post it when I know

Is the increase because of those two vitamins?
not likly unless vit D is activating macrophages which are detecting hbv

Is vit d3 activating my immune system?
ways to know, hbsag quant decreasing or if hbvdna detactable also hbvdna decreasing might be a sign.

I am planning to take Hepatitis Technologies medication all 4 types.
Do you think my alt will get even higher because of all those medicine?
no they should get lower no higher, if you have a fibroscan result please update after using heptech products

my tot chol is 170, ldl is 100 and hdl 60
these are very good, if you have a change to try red yeast rice with monacolin content standard a single pill of 3-4mg monacolin K can get it to perfect ranges

try also pantethine to rise hdl, it should be able to rise it 10%
